Synopsis
Nick and Alan have been on the run their whole life from magicians and demons. The magicians want their mother and a charm she possesses. When a brother and sister come to them for help removing a demon mark, the brothers are swept into a race for their lives and Nick is about to find out more than he bargained for.
For those of you who don't know, I wrote a post a few days ago asking for guesses on what people thought I'd like and what I'd hate about this book. Yeah, I'm bored of the same boring reviews. Anywho here's what people said:

This is what I liked, that I hope you will like too: Nick and Alan's complicated relationship, all the violent talk that makes me go giggly in a good way. Love those brothers.
K, Steph, I started out not knowing what I thought about these brothers. I mean, Alan was portrayed through Nicks eyes and Nick seems to love him but...well...it's complicated. ;) I was mad at Alan most of the time because I was sympathizing with Nick but by the end I was all teary eyed about them both. Their relationship was definitely the highlight of the book. Nicks dark attitude and violent streak was fun, wasn't it?
Pretty much, I think you'll like Nick and Alan. They are guys and they are realistic and I think they might just remind you a little bit of Cassel. I hope that's what you'll like (though, it's been quite some time since I read this one, so I might be way off base...) Oh, and I think you'll like the demon thing. The whole world of demon fighting and such. Vague enough? As far as hating...not sure. Maybe the girls? :)
Yep, Melissa, by the end I loved them both. As for reminding me of Cassel...nope not at all, but that doesn't mean I didn't like them and enjoy the book. The demon fighting reminded me of Supernatural the TV show I LOVE so I did enjoy that and the twist at the end (even though I saw it coming from page one) was fun! I definitely want to know what's going to happen next. LOL! Yep, Mae drove me nuts!
Well, as I only got two responses/guesses, I'll expound a little more, if you don't mind.
The best thing about this book is Nick and Alan's relationship. By the end I was seriously crying over their love for each other...especially Alan's love for Nick. I LOVED the "special-ness" of Nick. I saw it coming from page one, in fact the whole book was ridiculously predictable, but I have an obsession with MCs being special and unique in a cool way and become crazy invested in them.
There were a few things that bothered me...come on, this is me we're talking about. ;) I was bothered, for some reason, that the book was written in third person. The book stuck with Nicks point of view the whole time, why did it need to be in third person? I was also slightly irritated with how predictable it was but in the end the "twist" was expounded on and I found myself smiling really big and thinking, "COOL!" And, alas, the other thing that truly drove me crazy was all the telling! Soooooo much telling not ANY showing. I'm hoping that things get better in the next books. Yes, I definitely plan on reading them.
Thanks for helping me write a different type of review, everyone! Hope you enjoyed.
Fun review style - it sounds like you enjoyed this overall. I love them both but Alan is my favorite. :) Can't wait to see what you think of the next book!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I didn't really like Alan at first but loved him in the end.
DeleteNext book follows Mae and book three follows Sin. It totally threw me off at first, but I came to love their POVs just as much as Nicks and it made her able to go places with the story that she couldn't have just from Nick's POV.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I can handle Sin's POV but Mae? Argh!
DeleteDarn, well I got some of your likes right. So glad you enjoyed this book and hope the next books don't turn you off (as fakesteph said, they're told from Mae's and Sin's POV). I still haven't read the last one - what is wrong with me? :)
ReplyDeleteSo not looking forward to Mae's POV. She drove me crazy!
DeleteI am loving the Q&A review! I have had my eye on this book for some time and now I really want to read it. Thanks for the fun review.
ReplyDeleteIt was a fun read, and a fun way to review.
DeleteAww darn I missed out on al the predicting what you'd like and dislike fun. Next tiem you d this I am def in. Great way to mix things up. I thought the summary fo this one sounded very much like Supernatural and I know how you love those boys. For some reason. I am very much over books in third person right now. I just can't get into them.
ReplyDeleteIt was quite similar to Supernatural.
DeleteSo creative! Love it.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I may do it again sometime.
DeleteI can honestly say this is the most unique book review I've ever read! It's really interesting...
ReplyDeleteSo, do you like books in 1st person better? I kind of like 3rd person best, even if the book is all from one person's POV. But, I can go either way. Traditionally, books were never written in 1st person, so I wonder that people expect 1st person because it's a stylistic thing nowadays.
Also, a book with telling and NO showing??! What is up with that? That is a book I would hate, probably, no matter what. I better steer clear of this one.
I don't mind books in third person at all but for some reason it was awful in this one. I'm not sure why.
DeleteArghhh! I took a blogging break and totally missed your post about this, what a shame. Well, I'm really really glad you read it!! I totally didn't get the plot twists AT ALL and I usually do so I didn't think it was that predictable, guess you were cleverer than me ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started it I hated ALL the characters except Nick, like seriously, I nearly put the book down. But by the end I really liked and rooted for all of them. Except maybe Alan, I'm not a huge fan of Alan. I think he's more psychopathic than Nick, which is saying something. Mae does get better in the next book, too.
In regards to 3rd person...it didn't really bother me that much, to be honest. as far as the show not tell thing goes, I think that because it was told from Nick's perspective it's forgiveable. He doesn't really HAVE emotions so I think he was kinda limited in HOW he got things across...if that makes sense.
I'm really glad you read and did enjoy this, though. I hope you continue with the rest of the series
The Cait Files
Yeah, I was wondering what was up with you. That's OK. I got a few guesses to work from.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you don't like Alan, I mean, yeah, he lies all the time and I'm only judging from the first book but, I loved how much he loved Nick. If it weren't for him Nick wouldn't have...um...come back. Sorry, trying not to be spoilery. Ah well, to each there own.
Maybe my opinion of him will change.
It might in the later books...he's manipulative and a compulsive liar and he makes people trust him then screws them over. Considering that you know, he has the capacity to be moral and Nick doesn't...I actually think Nick is the more moral of the two.
ReplyDeleteWow, now I REALLY want to get to the others.
DeleteHaha! Maybe I overanalyse the whole thing...but I think I'm right :P obviously haha.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm actually eager to get to the next one even if it is about Mae. Don't worry, I over analyse everything too!
