Synopsis
Natalie writes a relationship column for her high school paper and thinks she does a pretty good job. When she's accused of not knowing anything about guys and becomes the laughingstock of her high school, she comes up with a plan to change all that. She's going undercover as a boy at an all boy boarding school to learn what guys really think.

What is has going for it
Well, I love books about girls pretending to be guys. It's a premise that's always good for a laugh. The cover, while weird, is sort of eye catching and fun...and, yeah, that's about all there is to say for this one.

What's lacking
It started off with promise. Sure these types are always rather unbelievable. After all, there's only a small percentage of people that could actually cross dress and be convincing, but it's still fun to read about. Or it was supposed to be. What really irked me about this one was it's blatant copycatting of the hilarious movie, She's The Man. I tried to ignore the first offense when our heroine, dressed as a guy, tells a girl she likes her shoes in front of another guy. Obviously that's not something a normal straight guy would do so, sure, it makes for an awkwardly funny moment but, once again, it's been done. Then, our heroine is playing basketball in gym and gets hit in the nether regions with a ball. Just like in, She's The Man, our character pauses and then, realizing how she should be acting, starts screaming in false pain. But when our heroine is ostracized and considered a loser by the "cool guys", how does she get them to think she's cool? By getting caught by one of these said cool guys with her two girlfriends in a provocative situation. Suddenly she's a cool guy...Really?! Now maybe the author wrote the book before she saw She's The Man, or maybe she hasn't seen the movie at all, but those sure are a lot of coincidences. Don't you think? Besides all that I just didn't care for the characters overmuch and the plot was fine but was obviously ripped off from STM.

Yea or Nay?
No. Just no. Watch She's The Man, at least it has Channing Tatum in it!

I Knew I Was Doing It Wrong

Review: Queen of the Dead

First Sentence On television, ghost-talkers run antique stores, solve crimes, or stand on a stage in a nice suit giving the teary-eyed audience a toothy, yet sympathetic grin.

Synopsis
Will and Alona are back. Graduated from high school, Will is working for a friend of his moms. When he meets a girl who, like him, can see ghosts he starts to learn more about his fathers past. Meanwhile Alona, furious that her parents seem to be getting over her death a little too fast, makes a mistake that make things a lot more sticky.

What it has going for it
I love this series! First of all, Will and Alona are such awesome characters and their relationship is surprisingly realistic. There's no insta-love that turns a blind eye to each others faults. Will is a believable male character written by a female author which is always a HUGE plus and he's just so funny to me. Alona is, yes, a little bit of a snot but she's endearing somehow too. Then comes the plot in these books. I love that, yeah, they're a little on the fluffy side but there's just enough depth to make you feel like you didn't completely waste your time. Everything ties together and has a purpose. There are no lose ends or pointless characters littering the book and that makes for a VERY satisfying read.

What's lacking
This one might be considered a filler book between the first and third book. It does bring up some questions and situations that aren't completely resolved but I still think it has a basic dilemma that was presented and fixed by the end of the book. ...Nope, can't really think of anything else that was bad.

Yea or Nay?
YES! Read these books. They've got the best of both plot and character worlds.

YA Is Rotting My Brain!!!

It seems the topic of YA rotting our brains or, if you prefer, shortening our attention spans, seems to be coming up with a few of my blogging friends lately. I think the latter phrase says it better but, "rotting my brain" is funner to say.

After spending a month where I only read adult books...or at least tried to, I've proven (for me, anyway) that reading strictly YA seems to make reading adult books or classics a LOT harder. But why? What is is about reading so much YA that makes it harder to focus and appreciate a good classic or adult book? I've discovered there seems to be two things that makes YA "rot our brain".

1) YA has a much simpler vocabulary. No, not picture book vocabulary or even MG, but just....simpler. Am I wrong? When was the last time you picked up an adult book and really looked at all the big words it uses? It's can be quite frightening to someone that mostly reads YA. Or, at the very least, frustrating.

2) YA doesn't usually offer much to make one ruminate, nor does it "waste" time meandering about with character introspection or world building. It's aimed at YA readers and they don't have the patience (supposedly) to read all that. They just want the story and maybe, for the girls, a bit of romance.

That's what is seems like to me, anyway. I'd love to hear your opinion. "If" you read mostly YA, do you notice that when you do try to read and adult book or a classic that it's hard? Or, if you read mostly adult books, do you ever pick up a YA book and gape at how "simplistic" the writing is?

Now, I know it might sound like I'm bashing YA. I'm not. Obviously. Look at what I predominately read. I'm just noticing it's effects on my attention span. And I'm thoroughly aware that it isn't just reading YA that does this, but watching TV, with it's 8 second sound bites and the internet, with a million different things to see and skim with just the click of a finger. It's gotten so bad it's nearly impossible for me to just do one thing at a time. If I'm not multitasking I get all antsy. It's driving me crazy!

So, I've decided to try to read more adult books to counter balance all the YA books I love reading and hopefully lengthen that attention span of mine!

What it has going for it
I've been putting off reading this book for a long time. I think I had some weird expectations. See, I thought they were going to be in the room the entire book and that it was going to have some deep message of sacrifice; with the mother keeping her son innocent of the awful things that were going on. Of course, once I started reading I realized that if this whole 321 page book was going to be about being locked in this room I was going to lose interest fast! Luckily, a hundred pages in things started happening and got very interesting from there on out. I enjoyed Jack's voice and found his actions and feeling incredibly realistic. I couldn't help but want to judge certain characters and kept having to remind myself that I have NO idea what it would be like to go through what they did. Then I'd laugh that these characters were so real to me that I even wanted to judge them. Talented writing indeed to accomplish that, agreed?

What's lacking
Like I said, those first hundred pages weren't very good at holding my attention but that might just be a personal preference. I think some people might be bothered by some of the graphic descriptions and subject matter. I don't know, once it got going I don't think there was much lacking.

Yea or Nay?
I'd recommend it.

Top Ten Tuesday

Today The Broke and the Bookish asks the question: What are the Top Ten book covers you love.
Well, we're told not to judge a book by it's cover but I think it's safe to say that we all do it anyway. I know I do! So, I'm going to list the Top Ten books I read because of their cover.

Infinity (chronicles of nick 1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon. This one I was draw to because of the cute kid. Alas, it was a complete miss.

Existence (existence trilogy 1) by Abbi Glines.Come on! Look at those eyes. This one wasn't the most amazing book I've ever read but it was kinda fun.

Nightlife (cal leandros) by Rob Thurman. This one just screams urban fantasy, my favorite genre, so I just had to read it. It was good, I've already purchased the rest of the series.

The Ghost and the Goth (ghost and the goth ) by Stacey Kade. This one caught my eye because of how annoyed the guy looked and I just knew it would be funny. It was. And had some really great depth to it too.

Intertwined (intertwined 1) by Gena Showalter. K, this one did sound good to me but I was first drawn in by the guy on the front. Unfortunately the cover was the ONLY thing this book had going for it.

White Cat (curse workers 1) by Holly Black. What's not to love? A hot guy AND a cute kitty? I was sold and it paid off I LOVE this series!

A Madness of Angels (urban fantasy 1) by Kate Griffin. What?! You didn't know that one of my favorite series of all time was something I picked up based solely on the cover?! I did and, oh, how happy I am that I did!

Shadow Moon (chronicles of the shadow war 1) by Chris Claremont and George Lucas. I read this series so long ago I don't ever really remember more than that I liked it and that the cover is definitely why I picked it up.

Homeland (the dark elf trilogy 1) by R.A Salvatore. Once again we have a fun looking guy and a awesome kitty. I couldn't help buying and reading it and I loved it!

Obernewtyn (chronicles of obernewtyn 1 ) by Isobelle Carmody. Yep, you guessed it. I picked it up because of the kitty. I adore this series so I'm glad I have a weakness for kitties.

So, what have we learned about my cover judging ways? Apparently I like cute guys and kitties.

This Week: My sister blogged about her son who loves to read. Ahhh.

Movie of the Week: Man on a Ledge. The movie was fun and suspenseful and, hey, it has Sam Worthington. I suffered through Clash of the Titans for him! See, we have to put this refillable bucket to use...a lot!

Food Talk: I'm now going to advertise something and not get paid for it. I LOVE these things! I wrap hamburgers, sandwiches and everything else in them and there's only 8 carbs in each one!

Soccer Sightings: My Calender. Purchased for a mere 20 dollars...hmmm, I prefer my homemade ones better. ;)

Plans For The Week: Yeah, I need to get new shoes but that's not the plan for the week. I just plan on putting these to better use. I haven't exercise hardly at all for three weeks! Tsk tsk.

What it has going for it
Well, I really wanted to like this one. It sounded so good and it's a bit obscure so I was hoping I'd found a gem but no such luck. It was pretty action packed, however, with lots of things constantly going on. It jumps right into the story with out a lot of back story to weigh you down and had an interesting premise, which is always good. Um, yeah, I can't think of much else it had going for it.

What's lacking
I love when a book just jumps right into a story and doesn't do so much explaining that you feel like yelling, "yeah, OK, I get it!" And while this one jumped into the action right away it never got to that point where you understand what's going on from character's conversations or actions. Seriously, four hundred plus pages and it never really made sense. I had to drag myself kicking and screaming through the whole book and was left just staring at the last page with an angrily raised eyebrow. A reviewer on Goodreads described it saying, "like I was looking through a steamed up window all the time. I just wanted to wipe it clean so I could see better." Agreed! Oh well, at least I finished the dang thing!

Yea or nay?
I'm sure plenty of people will like it and do like it but I wouldn't recommend it.

Because It's Been Awhile

If you guessed this was going to be a soccer post, you guessed right. If you thought I was just going to gush about hot soccer players you're wrong.

After being promised a new episode of House last night, and then finding a boring NASCAR race on instead, I watched for ten minutes while making my dinner. So there I was wondering why on earth anyone would choose to watch this "sport" and was inspired to write this post.

Five Reasons I Watch Soccer (that have nothing to do with the hot guys)

1 A soccer game is 90 minutes long. An hour and a half. Yeah, OK, in knock out stages in some cups it must be played longer if the games tied, but even then, it has two 15 minute overtimes and then goes to penalties so it does end. And all around two hours. That's considerably shorter than most sports.

2 There are NO FREAKING time outs every five seconds! (I'm looking at you basketball and football) The clock starts and doesn't stop till the game is over.

3 Because there are no time outs, there are no stupid commercials. You get to sit down and watch your game and ONLY your game.

4 Despite what people say about soccer being boring because they hardly score, it's not! Let's consider, shall we? What's more boring? Basketball, where they score so many times it's not even a novelty and hardly worth cheering about, or soccer, where they have to work incredibly hard and use some actual technique and skill to score? Seriously, people.

5 Alright, alright! I can't list five reasons to watch soccer without mentioning the hot guys! I really can't! Thank goodness for the workout regime that soccer enforces to create bodies like this.

Weather Small Talk: Sunny but cold! Stupid deceiving weather!

On The Idiot Box: Quite a few shows weren't on this week for some unknown reason. Grimm was on, though, and I really like this show, but if they don't throw us some real story instead of filler I'm going to give up. Any one else watching this one and agree with me?

Weekly Reads: I read and LOVED Partials by Dan Wells and I'm still trudging miserably through Shade by John B Olson. :( I wanted and still want to like it but it's just not that great. Don't ask why I'm so determined to finish it. Just stubborn I guess.

Crazy Kitty: It was VERY windy all day yesterday and there were lots of scary noises....for a cat anyway.

This Week: I had a stupid sore throat for most of the week that has now settled into a lovely sinus infection. It's making my teeth feel like they're going to pop out of my mouth. So fun.

Movie of the Week: I saw Chronicle and I think I enjoyed it but I was so motion sick from the way they filmed it that I'm not sure.

Food Talk: I'm trying really hard to live on a self imposed budget and since it's the end of the month the budget is gone. So, I've been eating what I have around and it's getting very sad.

Soccer Sightings: My boys played today and won. (yay!) but for some reason they played at 4:00 PM which is 8:00 AM my time! Come on! It's the weekend! Of course I still got up to support them...shhh, no need to mention I would have been up anyway for early church. Anywho, I think the only reason they scored was because of pure luck. Check it out. It's only 10 seconds in so you don't have to watch the whole thing...unless, like me, you like to watch them celebrate.

Music Discoveries: Again nothing "new" so I'll share some boring song you probably don't care to listen to. This one is rather weird but I've liked it since I first heard it years ago. If you like it let me know because I've yet to meet anyone that does.

Plans For The Week: Wednesday night I'm going to Barnes and Noble to purchase my very own copy of Partials because the author will be there! Yay, another signed book. Did you know that will make this 32 books I have signed?

Synopsis
I'm going to do something a little different. I HATE book trailers. I could tell you why but it would take too long. However, the book trailer to this book is so freaking awesome I thought I'd use it for the synopsis. Enjoy!

What it has going for it
I've been so excited for this one and when the awesome Emily let me borrow her ARC I was ecstatic! I enjoyed Dan Wells' John Cleaver series and I love his writing so you can imagine how high those hopes were. Because of those high hopes I was also afraid I might be disappointed. Well, I needn't have bothered. I LOVED it! It was action packed and had me turning pages as fast as I could and holding my breath. I had to keep making myself slow down and concentrate so I wouldn't miss anything. There were lots of twists, some that took me totally by surprise and others I saw coming but not till the perfect moment, like right before the characters. I love that! Oh, and I totally fell in love with Samm and I can't wait for more of him.

What's lacking
Sigh! I could be wrong, and I REALLY hope I am, but I don't think very many people are going to like this one. See, most people like character driven novels over plot driven ones. Not me, though. I mean, It's important that I like at least one character but the plot is much more important to me. I love when an author can come up with an amazing story that astounds and entertains me and doesn't waste precious time talking about a character's "feelings". Not that this one doesn't have amazing characters (did you hear me mention my new found love for Samm?) but there's hardly any romance or character drama. At least in my opinion there wasn't. There's also a lot of talk about science that I found fascinating but I can see how it might bore other people.

Yea or Nay?
Of course I still hope you give it a try, but if you're expecting another romance with a meager plot you might be disappointed.

Life After TV

It seems, lately, I've seen a few people commenting on their blogs that they didn't have a TV when they were growing up. I didn't have a TV while I was growing up either. So, then, of course, I started wondering if not having a TV in the home creates better readers. Cause you know me, I over analyse everything. ;)

I'm not saying I didn't watch TV as a kid. I would spend huge amounts of time at my friends house just so I COULD watch TV. And when I was about 17-18 I bought a TV and began watching even more ridiculous amounts of it. I still watch anywhere from 9-18 hours a week. Eeek! Scary.

The funny thing is, yes, I watch more TV as an adult then I did as a kid, because of availability, but I also read more as an adult too. So, I'm not sure NOT having a TV made a difference with me, but since I didn't have a TV how can I really know? "They" have done research and found that kids who watch TV have shorter attention spans so who knows.

So, I present the question to you. Did you have a TV as a kid? Did it effect your reading as a kid or, now, as an adult? And either way, do you have a opinion about whether TV watching affects our reading ability?

Weather Small Talk: Hmmm, a pretty mild week again and then it snowed this morning. What's with it snowing on SUNday?

On The Idiot Box: Well, as I mentioned Dr. Chase seems to be safe on House but maybe the show is being canceled after this season??? Anyone know? I'm enjoying New Girl and The Big Bang Theory the most these days. Maybe because my attention span isn't lasting an hour for my other shows. BTB the scene on this week's TBBT with Sheldon and Kripke playing basketball had me laughing so hard!

Weekly Reads: I finished Atonement but that's all. These adult books take longer to read! I might have to carry on into March. I'm still working on Shade by John B. Olson but it's not holding my attention too well, and I got the chance to borrow Partials by Dan Wells from Emily and even though it's YA and I'm doing my adults only month, I'm going to HAVE to read it. I'm so excited!

Crazy Kitty: Whenever she gets the notion to actually get off her butt and play, it's hilarious to watch her try to skid around corners on a tile floor. :)

This Week: Was a crazy weird week for me and I'm not so sure in a good way. I'm discovering I'm a creature of habit and I hate when things change...even though I keep telling myself I want them to.

Movie of the Week: I finally saw Thor and liked it but I hate movies where the bad guy is someone you feel bad for! I don't want them to lose!!!

Food Talk: Yeah, the crazy weird week I had has made me so sick to my stomach I'm not eating much and when I do it's like it has no taste. Not fun!

Soccer Sightings: Hmmm. Do you think he's going for a super sexy look or pondering if he looks good in turquoise?

Music Discoveries: Nothing new this week so maybe I can share an old favorite? Do you really care? No? Too bad! ;)

Review: Atonement

Synopsis
Briony witnesses a flirtation between her older sister Cecilia and the son of a servant, Robbie Turner. Not understanding, she commits a crime that changes each of their lives forever.

What it has going for it
LOL! Oh dear! I've never had the experience I had while reading this book...ever! I saw the movie way back when it came out and HATED it. So, when my book club decided to read it, it was with great trepidation that I decided I was going to try it despite my prejudices. Then, when I actually got the book, I kept warily eyeing it across the room and finally had to pick it up or risk not finishing it in time for book club. Then came the process of reading it. I won't bore you with too many details but, besides some fairly good writing and imagery, it was painful! I didn't like ONE SINGLE character and when you can't have at least one character to root for, it's hard to like a book. Plus, the movie was very similar, it was like reliving those horrid two hours all over again. And then...I got to the last few pages. (whoohoo! Almost finished) And then I got to the last, very last , paragraph...and went, "OH!!! I get it! Huh?" LOL! See why I'm laughing? So, no, I didn't love the book, all of the sudden, but I understood it. I finally get it!

What's lacking
I've already discussed a few things but I'll point out the things that bothered me the most. The writing was lovely but bordered on overly flowery...of course, now I understand why but it still got tiresome. I noticed a great deal of "telling", as well, and that was a bit of a disappointment; I'd heard Ian McEwan was an amazing writer. The whole fifty pages with Robbie at war just plain bored me to tears. I guess that makes me sound insensitive but that's just how I felt.

Yea or Nay?
Um, well, if you can trudge your way through it to see the whole picture it's kinda worth it, actually.

Following/Commenting Quandary

Well, this is probably going to be one heck of an awkward post but I'm really fretting about a few things and would love your wisdomous insight.

1 Anyone else have those people whose blog you follow and religiously read and comment on nearly every day and, yet, they NEVER come by your blog and comment, let alone read it? It would be nice if these people would acknowledge the fact that I comment on their blogs all the time and return the favor once and awhile, but here's my real question. Since they don't, should I follow these people who don't bother to "follow" me back? Hmmm, such a conundrum. I don't want to be rude and unfollow them but I don't really feel like spending my precious time reading and commenting anymore. Especially since there's thousands of book blogs out there I could be reading instead and THEY might actually return the favor. So, what do I do? What say you? 2 Speaking of thousands of book blogs, how on earth do you guys manage to keep up with your reading of all of them? I struggle with this as I'm sure most of you do. To be honest, I only usually read the ones on my sidebar not EVERYONE I'm following. I'd like to but it's impossible! I've noticed that sometimes if I comment on someones blog THEN they'll come read and comment on mine. Is that how you guys do it? Or do you just read the posts that look interesting? Or do you have favorites you check out everyday no matter what? Ahhh! See my problem. How to keep up?! I would love to be able to read and comment on every single blog I follow and then some, but how?

Well, I could go on and on with my questions but I'll give it a rest for the day. ;) I'd love your advice, though.

(added after reading a few comments and realizing I've been slightly misunderstood. I should have said this better) I like the "relationship" that forms between the bloggers who comment on my blog and whose blogs I comment on. When it's one sided it's not so very fun...you know? So, this isn't about comments for the sake of comments but more about a one sided relationship. Does that make anymore sense???

Weather Small Talk: I woke up this morning to snow. :( Still snowing now. Sigh!

On The Idiot Box: I feel like I missed quite a bit because I was at LTUE the last three days but I did watch House on Monday and am irritated that they "might" me getting rid of Dr. Chase (Jesse Spencer) Can you blame me?!

Weekly Reads: I'm reading Atonement by Ian McEwan for book club and am not enjoying it too well. It's a little slow and who can really like a book that's described as, "A beautiful and majestic panorama."? ;) I'm also reading Shade by John B. Olson and it's a little confusing but at least a LOT more stuff is actually happening.

Crazy Kitty: I'm quite sure she missed me quite desperately while I was gone most of the week.

This Week: LTUE took over the last half of the week. It's a writers conference, for those of you who don't know, and it was a blast! A hard chairs, buns aching blast! I took lots of notes and have some fun post ideas and a little more desire to get back to writing.

Movie of the Week: No movies this week but I want to see The Vow that just came out and a few others. If I could just find the time.

Food Talk: Going to LTUE wreaked a tiny bit of havock on my diet. I got to eat hamburgers, fries, tater tots, brownies, and white bread. Eeek! Back to the diet for me.

Soccer Sightings: Actually my team is playing now so I don't have much to report. They are a goal down, though. Come on guys! Oh, they got a penalty now it's a tie at the half!

Music Discoveries: We Are Young by Fun. I never know if I should show these crazy music videos as they might offend some people but this one does have some cool slow motion stuff that's fun.

Plans For The Week: I need to focus and read like crazy in order to finish Atonement for book club on Thursday.

Review: Midnight in Austenland

Synopsis
When Charlotte's husband leaves her for another woman she decides to take a break. And what better place than a estate in England that offers a full on Austen-esque experience.

What it has going for it
I adore Shannon Hale's writing. She's so witty and clever and I'm always smiling as I read her books. This one was no exception and I loved getting to know Charlotte and watch her journey. What girl wouldn't want to go to Pembrook Park and be wooed by handsome gentlemen in austen-esque style? I love the idea of a place like this and it's one of my favorites to read about. This one wasn't just a rehashing of the first book, as I was worried it might be, but had a completely different MC that was just as endearing and fun to read about. With a fun mystery and dashing gentlemen I had a lot of fun.

What's lacking
I can't say what specifically bothered me without giving things away so I won't but "it" kinda weirded me out. The ending was a little too neat and tidy and I had a hard time getting into the mystery.

Yea or Nay?
Yes, especially to fans of the first book...or, of course, anything Austen.

Weather Small Talk: Mildest winter EVER! I'm loving it!

On The Idiot Box: Besides The Vampire Diaries, I'm not totally engrossed with anything lately. Oh, I keep religiously watching my shows but I'm a little bored with things. :( I did rent the first season of the BBC's Being Human and watched it. Very....interesting/weird.

Weekly Reads: Ugh, I'm not off to a great start with my adult books only month. I've started Midnight in Austenland by Shannon Hale and I'm liking it, but I'm too distracted to really get into it.

Crazy Kitty: She insists on knocking all her toy balls all over my bedroom floor but once she's done she doesn't play with them. Maybe she just likes the way they look spread across the floor. They are colorful.

This Week: Was boring! I exercised all week like a good little girl, though, and lost two more pounds.

Movie of the Week: I finally watched Water For Elephants and for some reason thought it was going to be a horribly sad ending...WTH?! I know I should be glad it ended well, but I'm still so confused.

Food Talk: :( I keep eating the same 6 meals over and over. They all taste fine and I'm not bored with them but I should probably come up with something new. Monotony kills!

Soccer Sightings: Um, so I'm watching my game yesterday and couldn't help but notice how cold it looked. The wind was blowing and every player was wearing long sleeved shirts...all but Arbeloa, that is. Why would the undead need to keep warm? Mwaa ha ha!

Music Discoveries: Well, to be fair I only like the music, no singing. I just don't like rap. No Church in the Wild.

Plans For The Week: Lot's of bookish things, I think. Rebecca Stead author of When You Reach me is coming to our local library and LTUE is this weekend. I've never been before but I think I'm going to some of it.

And The Moral Of The Story Is...

You know how I'm slightly, just slightly picky about books? (I'll just wait for the laughter dies down before I continue, shall I?) Done? Alrighty then. Back to my point. See, when I was young, every time I read something, whether it was a article in a magazine, picture book, or full on novel, my mom would ask me what it was about and then ask me what the moral was; what was the author trying to get across. So, my whole life, no matter what I read, I was always looking for that hidden message or moral.

Fast forward to being an adult and attending a book club wherein we read A Wizard of Earthsea. I read it and saw all this deep meaning therein. Then, at book club, we watched an interview with the author, Ursula K Le Guin. And she informed a group of students that people were always asking her what message she was trying to get across in AWOE. To my surprise she informed the students that she wasn't trying to say anything, she was just telling a story. She may have gone on to say something about the message being different for everyone but the thing that stood out to me was that she didn't write the book with a moral.

Well, that just blew me away! I'm not sure I even believe her. Whether she had some great message or not, don't you think some of her beliefs and opinions came through in the book? I certainly do but that's just me. I can't just read a book for the story. There needs to be some sort of point to it; some reason I just spent hours reading it. Even a light fluffy book usually has some little message in it. Or maybe the character just grows up a little, or learns something new about themselves or the world around them. But, again, that's just me I'm guessing. I'm also guessing that's why some books irritate me. Either they're without a moral or I don't like the moral. So sue me! ;)

So, what about you? Do you look for meaning or morals in books or read them just for the story? And if you do read them just for the story please tell me why. Don't you want to learn something, even a tiny little something from that many pages and that much time? Because, yes, books are for escapism but aren't they better when you feel like you learned something or witnessed some growth that may or may not apply to you? Don't some of the books we love the most become favorites because we related to a character or situation so deeply?

Help me out here people. What kind of reader are you? And please, expound. ;)

Fun little road trip book with an honest ending.

Jessica's Guide To Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey
Amusing little story with an ending just a little too rushed.

Reads more like a self analysis exercise. Ugh!

A sweet, fun story.

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles 1) by Marissa Meyer
An amazing twist on the classic fairy tale. Thoroughly awesome!

A unique exciting story but slightly disappointing characters.

The Adoration of Jenna Fox (Jenna Fox Chronicles 1) By Mary E. Pearson
An engrossing, thought provoking story littered with symbolism.

I'm actually impressed with how many I liked this month! Pretty sad that usually I read so many that are duds for me. My favorites of the month were Inheritance and Cinder. Least favorites and only ones I didn't like were Infinity and Looking For Alaska. Not too shabby, huh?

Review: The Adoration of Jenna Fox

Synopsis
When Jenna Fox wakes up from a coma she's told she was in an accident. As she struggles to regain her memories she finds out more than she wanted to know about the accident and how far her parents were willing to go for their adoration of her.

What it has going for it
One word: Engrossed! I was so freaking engrossed the whole time I read this book; it only took two sittings. The writing style was perfect for the story, with short simple sentences. I was fascinated with the depth of the book. See, in my opinion, this wasn't a story, not really, but rather a treasure trove of symbolism. There's so many ideas and questions and discussions on ethics to be had. It's a book that deserves not only to be read but pondered and discussed. You can't NOT discuss this book. I even bought it for my sister so she could read and discuss with me! I'm still reeling with the thoughts and feeling this one provoked.

What's lacking
And now you're going to laugh at me. I'm not a huge fan of symbolism; I think it's too flashy and pretentious. Just tell me what you mean! I did think it worked very well for this story, though, so I'm not really complaining about that. The only thing that bothered me was I'm still not sure I ACTUALLY liked the book. Oh, it had me thinking and pondering but did I like where the characters ended up? Did I like what was concluded and not concluded in the end? I don't know! See why I'm frustrated? That's what I hate about symbolism, it messes with your head! I'll read the second book, but I think it's going to be more of an actual story and less of this deep all consuming symbolism. Whether that's a good thing or not, I'm just not sure.

Yea or nay?
Yes, if for nothing else then to open your mind to all the ideas and questions this book presents. And it was engrossing, after all. ;)

Adults Only!

LOL! I love saying "adult books" It makes it sound like books that belong behind a beaded curtain. ;) Anywho, as much as I love YA books, I've been spending a great deal of time looking at all the adult books I have on my shelves that keep getting ignored. So, for some time now, I've been planning on having a month where I only read adult books. After all, I have about 213 adult fiction books and there's 84 I haven't read yet. That's not horrible but that number is never going to get smaller unless I read some, right?

So, I'm deeming February adult books only month! Here's some of the books I've chosen for the month. Mind you these are subject to change depending on my mood.

I think my kitty approves. I hope to get Midnight in Austenland that just came out today (whoohoo!) and read it too.

I hope you guys out there usually stick with YA books will still read my reviews this month. I'd hate to lose your attention cause I'm a bit of an attention whore. ;) And, hey, maybe you could join me. Don't you have some adult books that keep getting set aside for YA? Sure you do, how's about giving them some love.

Review: Everneath

Synopsis
Nikki has six months left. Six months to say good by to her friends and family and the love of her life, Jack. Six months before she goes to the Everneath...again.

What is has going for it
I've been waiting for this one forever. I knew my expectations were too high and I already knew I was going to like Cole over Jack, even when the author told us Cole didn't have a chance, but I got my hands on it and dove right in anyway. It had a very different unique story and the ending was very exciting and fast paced. I was impressed with the writing considering it's a debut novel and those can often leave a lot to be desired. And I really liked the underlying theme of redemption woven through the story. All in all the plot was what saved this one and earned three stars on Goodreads from me.

What is lacking
Sigh, I guess it's not really THIS book's fault that I'm getting a little tired of the poor guy that isn't morally perfect and isn't a big fat romantic sap that just NEVER gets the girl. It was like watching The Phantom of the Opera all over again. Don't get me wrong, I like Raul from TPOTO but I always did feel bad for the Phantom. Likewise, I felt bad for Cole, and I hate knowing he's going to be strung along for two more books before he DOESN'T win. :( Yeah, so it wasn't the book's fault that it had bad timing with my emotions. And it didn't help that I couldn't stand how unrealistically sweet and understanding Jack was, but then again, I've always struggled with the idea of a love like Jack and Nikkie's...well, at least a love like that occurring in high school. I was also bothered with the relationship between Nikki and her dad and brother. She did, after all, come to say goodbye to them too, not just Jack, but there wasn't enough interaction with them to make me believe she really cared. So, yeah the plot was great but the characters weren't, for me, anyways. Luckily I'm more of a plot girl. ;)

Yeah, I think the characters will only bug me, and the plot is great so...yeah.

Synopsis
A Cinderella retelling with a science fiction twist. Believe me...this isn't your mom's Cinderella and you'll be glad!

What it has going for it
Let me share a little secret. I'm not a huge fan of retellings, particularly fairy tale retellings, but when I saw the awesome cover to this lovely book and read the synopsis, I was very intrigued. The biggest problem with retellings, in my opinion, is the unoriginality. No matter what twist the author takes it's basically the same story you've read a million times. Not so with Cinder. Oh, sure, there's a prince and a girl who lives with her step mother and step sisters who's treated as a lower life form, but the whole science fiction twist and the melding of other fairy tales, that will come into play in the sequels, made for the most original and fun take on Cinderella I've ever read. In fact, the original pales in comparison to this one. As you all know by now, I'm a bit of a picky negative reader and I go into books with a great deal of skepticism; my critical self on high alert, and I went into this book exactly the same, but no matter how hard I looked I couldn't find any faults. I really enjoyed this one and can't wait for the rest of the books to come out.

What's lacking
Oh, it's a tiny bit predictable but, as I learned from the author, it was supposed to be, so no issues there, and it did have a massive cliffhanger.

The NOT Love Triangle

Oh, don't worry, I'm not going to whine about love triangles. The truth is I don't mind them...IF they're REAL love triangles. What I can't stand and want to whine about is the "NOT love triangle". You know what I'm talking about. We have our heroine, she meets a guy, usually the new guy, and is instantly in love with him. Then, of course there's the "other" guy. Either an old friend who's always been there for her, or another new guy who she finds attractive as well. The problem occurs when the heroine is drawn by some supernatural power to one of the guys. For example, Emerson and Michael from Hourglass by Myra McEntire. Or when our heroine is in WUV with one of the guys forever and ever no matter what. Bella and Edward from Twilight. See what I mean about the NOT love triangle. Oh, sure there's two guys but it's so freaking obvious who the heroine is going to end up with. Why even bring in another character?! Does there have to be a freaking love triangle in every YA paranormal romance?

See, when I was a teenager I used to read this series of books.

Anyone ever heard of these? They're historical romance book and, as you can tell from the cover, there was always a love triangle. Anywho, maybe these books are the reason I'm so burned out on love triangles that are so freaking obvious and unnecessary.

Sheesh, I'm even staring to wonder if there is such thing as a real love triangle. Anyone know of any books with TRUE love triangles?

And now, after all that rambling, the real reason for my post. I went to the launch party of Brodi Ashton's Everneath the other night and had a blast but that's beyond the point. The point is, Brodi informed us, that in her book, there is no love triangle. What?! But there's a guy named Jack and a guy named Cole! Doesn't that mean there's a love triangle?! I was all ready to jump into the book on "Team Cole" only to be informed there is no "Team Cole", there's no way Nikki is ending up with Cole....according to the author.

Well, what the hell?! Now I'm wondering if all those NOT love triangles I've been so irritated with were even meant to be love triangles! Really makes you think, doesn't it?

I still don't know why the authors throws in another guy, though. Is it really necessary?

Jessica's senior year is turned on it's head when a handsome foreign exchange student sweeps into her small town and claims she's a vampire princess and has been betrothed to him since birth.

What it has going for it
Well, first off, it was free to download from Amazon. That's good, right? My favorite thing about this one was the letters Lucius wrote to his uncle. They were highly amusing. I liked that there were absolutely none of the usual things we see in YA books. For example: absent parents, love at fist sight, skinny beautiful perfect heroines, and immediate acceptance of the paranormal. All in all, it was a fun fast read...once I got into it, cause it took awhile. Oh, and the best part? It is a series but it stands on it's own beautifully. No need to read any sequels if you don't want to.

What's lacking
All those good things? Well, it was sort of like reading a check list of things the author set out to defy. I appreciated them, but they were a bit obvious. I also found the ending a little rushed and unbelievable. Both main characters changed so dramatically through out the book, as well. With Jessica it felt like she was maturing and progressing, so, no complaints there, but with Lucius it just felt like he had a split personality.

Yea or Nay?
Oh, sure for a quick light read and a good laugh at the dry witticism of Lucius' letters.

K, I seriously hoped this meme would help me pick up a few books of the shelf but so far I've only given myself some serious guilt issues. Still, I have a blast picking books and highlighting them. Maybe I'll even get excited enough to read them or one...hopefully.

Review: Looking For Alaska

What its got going for it
Well, I don't mind John Green's writing style and his plots aren't full of holes. Both good things. This one had a fairly good message to it...if you can pick it out of all the alcohol fumes and cigarette smoke. And, yeah, that's about all I liked about it.

What's lacking
I wouldn't necessarily say there's anything lacking in this book but I found myself reading it with absolutely NO expression on my face, or emotion in my heart. I was bored for most of it. Usually, even if I hate a book, I'll at least FEEL hate. That's better than nothing right? Which is what I felt with this one, a big fat, who the heck cares! Anywho, half way through the book I'd figured out everything that was going to happen so I set it aside to go to bed. But I just sat there trying to figure out what exactly was bugging me about it. So, here's what bugged me about it. The only other John Green book I've read so far is Paper Towns. I don't really remember it it (never a good thing) but I remember liking it OK. The problem is, that these books are so similar. John Green is SOOOO writing about himself. Have you not noticed that his main mail characters are always average Joes with a streak of nerd in them? That his main girl characters are always "damaged" but just so dang "fun" and "alluring"? (at least in these two books) I just felt like perhaps John Green might have been seeing a therapist at the beginning of his career and that these books were the result of some sort of self analysis exercise. I know your supposed to write what you know but nobody wants to hear about what a lame teenager you were and the damaged girl you were desperately "in love" with. At least not TWICE. I kept thinking he could have at least had the decency to write himself...er...his character right into a mental institution like J.D Salinger had the decency to do!

Yay or Nay?
Well, I'm quite sure most of you have read it already so this is a moot point, but, no, I'd say skip it.

Weather Small Talk: Well, we kept getting told it was going to snow but all we've gotten is rain. Actually, as I hate snow, I'm fine with this.

On The Idiot Box: Oh boy, lets see. I checked out the new show on FOX called Alcatraz. You heard of this one? I watched it and think it has serious potential. I'd say it's a mix between Lost and Prison Break but since I didn't watch those shows I can't say for sure. I also checked out The Finder on FOX and was way less impressed. I'm loving Revenge still, just in case you wondered. And I missed all my other shows and am still trying to catch up on those so no news there.

Weekly Reads: I finished I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith for book club and enjoyed it. I also read Looking For Alaska by John Green and am very nervous about writing a review because, well, I didn't like it so much. :( Anywho, I started Cinder by Marissa Myer and am liking it so far.

Crazy Kitty: Not so crazy this last week. She's been sleeping and sleeping and...you guessed it sleeping! Depression maybe???

This Week: Well, I had book club which is always awesome and a definite highlight of my month. I did a new kickboxing routine that made me so sore I had to take a day off from exercising and I saw the awesome movie I've been waiting for...but more about that right....

Movie of the Week: ...Now! I've been waiting and waiting for the new Underworld movie to come out and so when it came out on Friday I was so there! I even saw it in 3D and it was pretty cool but I was so worried that because they did it in 3D they'd forget that they were actually telling a story but no worries. It was AWESOME! I love these movies!

Food Talk: Um, this is SOOO bad but I saw a commercial for Taco Time's 5 Alarm Burrito and I know it's fattening and totally against my diet but I had to try it. :( It was super yummy! I mean take a big fattening burrito with spicy sauce and add tater tots and I'm a goner!

Soccer Sightings: Sheesh! I don't know what's up with me lately but I forgot another soccer game! Ahhh! And by the time I remembered it was over and...they'd lost. :( See? If I don't watch they lose.

Music Discoveries: I didn't actually discover anything new this week so I'd thought I'd share a secret. I happen to be obsessed with 50's 60's music and here's a favorite.

Plans For The Week: It seems like I've been waiting for this book forever! At long last Brodi Ashton's Everneath is coming out and I get to go to the launch party! YAY!

A Personal Moment

Remember when I told you I had PCOS? Yeah, too much information, I know. Well, sometimes, if you lose weight, some of the annoying symptoms of it will go away. I was getting so sick of those annoying symptoms that I finally decided to put in the effort and change my eating and exercising lifestyle for good. I also was (was being the key word) insulin resistant which is a step away from being hypoglycemic which is a step away from being diabetic and I really didn't want to deal with that!

So, on the 1st of September 2010 I began my diet. With a lot of hard work and tons of determination I have since lost 85 pounds, am no longer insulin resistant and am still losing. So why am I telling you all this boring info?

What? Can't I gloat a little? So, here's my before and after pics.

Synopsis
Written in diary form this book tells the story of Cassandra and her family and their life in a rundown English castle. With adventure and romance, this coming of age story will capture your heart. It certainly caught mine.

What its got going for it
I adored this book almost from page one! I've heard it compared to Pride and Prejudice but besides the fact that two brothers of a marriageable age move into the neighborhood, I found nothing else in common with P&P. So, don't go expecting it. But do expect a book worth investing your emotions in. And be prepared for those emotions to go on quite the roller coaster ride. I loved how quickly Cassandra makes you care about her and her family and how well she describes everyone in the book. The things in Cassandra's life that might not seem overly exciting become thoroughly adventurous and exciting in her words. And for you YA only lovers...um....Cassandra is 17. Sure it takes place in the 1940's but this will surely be enjoyable to YA lovers.

What's lacking?
The only two things that slightly ruined this book for me was Cassandra's attitude after she realized she was 'in love" I was horribly disappointed in her overly dramatic actions. I can understand it but it made this character I LOVED turn into someone I only mildly cared for. That's just a personal preference, though. It was also horribly predictable and convenient but tha was forgivable because of the great story.

Yea or Nay?
Yes, definitely worth a read! Don't let the "classic" typecast that goes with this book scare you off. It's readable and entertaining and isn't that what we're all looking for?

How a Fun Book Event Pushed Me Over The Edge

So, there seems to be some amazing bookish events happening and about to happen at my local library. I had the opportunity to meet Marissa Myer and just two days later attended The Family Literacy Symposium at the same library.

Now a lot of these events are directed towards YA books and YA book readers but this one, while having a few YA things, was more directed to adults; a nice change of pace. The keynote speech was by Haven Kimmel author of these amazing memoirs and even has some other books I've yet to read. I must rectify that.

I loved these memoirs and highly recommend them! The keynote speech was unlike any I've ever been to. We had Haven start a discussion on Ereaders. We heard all sorts of opposing opinions and it was fascinating to me, though, some people were disappointed she didn't talk more about her past. Well, I say, read the books if you want to know more about her past! Anywho, it was a blast.

We then went to a session where the library director and some library workers talked about the best books they'd read in 2011. Sigh! You can imagine the list of books I walked away with. No? Well let me enlighten you. I've been trying really hard for the past six months to not break the 600 mark of books on my TBR list. Well, it's all over now!

So I'm trying out a new review format as part of my new years resolution to try to find the good in things. Enjoy.

What its got going for it
Well, do I really need to say more than those two little words, "road trip"? K, I know, just because I like road trip books doesn't mean you do but still. So, yeah, I love a good road trip book and so I was perfectly willing to read this book and enjoy the road tripiness. And I did! It had all the fun elements of a road trip. Stops at wacky landmarks of the mid west and some fun metaphors for the landmarks and the characters. It has some romance and humor and a touch of mystery all combining for a fun read. Plus the end was so realistic and honest, I have to say it saved the book for me.

What's lacking
I'm all about good writing, both the technical aspect of writing and the plot and development and this one left nothing to be desired in those areas but the characters, especially Lillian, were a little selfish and single minded. I mean, here you have poor Penny who had a pretty awful life and problems, with things so bad she actually fakes her own kidnapping, and all Lillian can think about is whether Josh likes her or not. Really? How selfish can you be?! Meanwhile Josh was so lackadaisical and aimless and even though it was supposed to be cute I wasn't really impressed. And what was with him never wearing a shirt?! Nice abs or nor please leave something to be desired!

Yea or nay?
I'd say yes, it was a road trip book, after all. Just don't expect to adore the characters.

A Night With Marissa Myer

I can never do these fun bookish things I attend justice but I shall try. I had the fun opportunity to go meet Marissa Myer the other night, author of this not so little book.

I was actually quite excited for this one. Firstly because this is not a local author and for some reason it's just fun to meet an author from somewhere else. Don't get me wrong, Utah has some great local authors who are always having some event or other but sometimes, because of all those events, I tend to start taking it for granted and getting a little bored. I long to see other authors. I know, I know. Very selfish of me. :(
Anywho, the other reason this event was exciting was because us Utah bloggers were invited to a sit down with Marissa before the actual event. So, we got to sit and listen to her talk about her book and chat with her. It was quite fun and much more personable.

After that fun little sit down there was the "normal" event where we got to hear Marissa talk about how a writing contest to win a walk on roll on Star Trek was the beginning of this four book series.

The whole thing was a blast and of course I got my book signed, as well.....Now if I could just hurry and read it. ;)

I don't even know! It was THAT all over the place.

General thoughts
Look at the cover! Look at the hot kid! Read this much better synopsis! Sounds and looks great huh? I bought it way back in 2010 when it first came out and, knowing my expectations were way too high, I just kept putting it off. Well, I finally picked it up and for some reason assumed it was about an older kid. More like 16 17. Alas, he was only 14 and though this is classified as YA it reads way more like a middle grade. Still, I just readjusted my perceptions and tried, really tried, to enjoy it! It was just all over the place! There were way too many characters, all with crazy weird names and the writing, while sometimes witty, was just not that impressive. I seriously all most gave up on it but at that point I was on page 350 and I didn't want to be beat by a stupid book! So, yeah, it had potential but it just wasn't written well enough for me. I like my stories a little better crafted.

Characters
Nick was a wisecrack and some of the things he said were funny but I just could never get a hold on his personality. The rest? Well, I think a quote from the book would be best.

"Must be some mutant form of maternal bipolar disorder."

Would I recommend it?
I might have for a really young boy because there's so much ridiculous action but it's too long and needlessly complicated.

TBR Tuesday # 1

Well, my friend Dana, has decided to start a little meme called TBR Tuesday where we can take the opportunity to talk about a book or two that's on our TBR shelf. So, I thought, for a change, I'd join her today. You can head on over there link up too.

So, as you know may know, I'm constantly talking about a little series that's technically called Urban Magic but is referred to, by Goodreads and me, as the Matthew Swift series. I LOVE these books and this book, Mirror Dreams and its sequel, Mirrow Wakes are actually by the same author. Different name, same author. So, why then, have both these books been sitting my shelf for years?! I know I'm nervous they won't be as good as I'm hoping and that my expectations are too high, but what if they are as amazing as I'm hoping and I've stupidly been putting them off?! Sigh. I need to pick these dang books up and read them, agreed?

Weather Small Talk: It was a surprisingly warm and sunny and beautiful all week and then, yesterday, it snowed. Just a skiff but at least it was feeling a little like winter.

On The Idiot Box: The Vampire Diaries was new this week and I was so excited...and then I watched the episode! There getting rid of Jeremy! NO!!!!! He's too cute to be written off.

Weekly Reads: I finished Inheritance! It was awesome once it got going and I'm kinda sad to be done with the series. I'm reading Infinity and it's a little more middle grade than YA but it's OK. I also had the weirdest dream about The Scorpio Races so I had to download it to my phone and hopefully I'll be getting to it soon.

Crazy Kitty: I swear my kitty has a personality overhaul every week! She used to sit in the windowsill for hours and now I can't get her to, to save her life. Seriously! She changes all the time.

This Week: It's been a quiet week. Not much to report. I did admit to myself I have a bit of a shopping when I'm depressed problem. Sigh. I did get the cutest dress for just 20 bucks, though!

Movie of the Week: I saw We Bought A Zoo and, yes, it's super warm and fuzzy but it was cute and worth a see.

Food Talk: I made a super yummy corn and black bean salad for a family thing and had the hardest time sharing it. I wanted to just eat it all myself!

Soccer Sightings: Yep, it's official I'm their good luck charm. ;) I missed the first half of their game yesterday but when I came in and watched the second half they scored three more times making the final score an impressive 5-1!

Music Discoveries: K, I tweeted about this already, but I'm loving this song by the Airborne Toxic event.

Plans For The Week: Marissa Meyer, author of THIS little book will be coming to my local library on Thursday and i'll definitely be there!

Review: Inheritance

General thoughts
Whew! I finally finished it! I'll admit after my re-reads of the first books in the series it was a bit of an overload, so I took a little break. Alright, the book sat on my nightstand taunting me everyday! I finally picked it up and waded through the first two hundred pages and then...holy crap, things took off! It was so exciting and heart wrenching that I kept talking out loud to the book. I couldn't put it down. Then all that excitement builds to this huge climatic scene and ends, and I'm sitting there looking at the book and there's one hundred plus pages left and I'm thinking, WTH? But it all made sense. There was so much to wrap up that it just took that many pages. I ended up being glad for those pages so I could take a deep breath and see the good that came from all the fighting and trials and say goodbye to all the wonderful characters! Paolini wrapped up every little thing, all the intricate details, and whether you like the way he did it or not (and I'll admit there was one thing that bothered me) you have to admit he did, in fact, do so. (unlike some authors...ahem) He did leave a few stories hanging but, as he's going to be writing more about Alagaesia in the future, it's fine by me. I thoroughly enjoy this series and all the naysayers can go wallow in their bitterness. They couldn't do any better no matter how hard they tried.

Characters
I'm sure I've said it before but one of my favorite things about this series are the characters and more importantly the relationships between them.

Would I recommend it?
Yes, despite all the naysayers, I would!

Lucky Charm Or Dumb Luck?

I am SOOOO taking credit for this! K, so yesterday I totally forgot that Real Madrid was playing. I know, and I call myself a fan, for shame! I was out running errands and talking on the phone with my sister when I realized my mistake. I instructed her husband to quickly look up the score for me, figuring it was about half time, only to discover they were two goals down. Depression was setting in and getting worse as my sister "jokingly" suggested I was their lucky charm and they were losing because I wasn't watching.

No, I didn't rush right home, taking my sisters words as truth, I went to Walmart and finished my shopping. THEN, I rushed home and, the minute I walked in the door, turned on the game. There were twenty five minutes left and they were still down two goals. Sigh. Then, and I kid you not, within five minutes of me turning on the TV they had scored twice and within twelve minutes they had scored three times to take the win!

I guess I AM their lucky charm. ;)

Oh, and here's a hot pic. I did talk soccer, after all.

Top Ten Tuesday

Well, I know most people will be listing books that come out this year, and I'll have a few of those too, but I'm determined to get to some books that I feel woefully behind on. So here they are, ten books or series I'm going to read...THIS year...dang it!

And I've already bought the first five so I WILL be reading them whether I like them or not. ;)

Again, I own the first three so I will be reading these too.

I can't wait for this one! I might even have to re-read the first two in anticipation.

I don't think I have to tell you how excited I am for this one! But would you look at the guy on this one?! Blech!

I've been waiting for this one forever and so many of my friends have already read it. :( I'm being patient. I am, I am, I am!

So freaking excited!!! But what is up with that cover? It's not awful but it doesn't match the series.

I love Dan Well's books and this one looks so good! I can't wait to get my hands on it.

This one won't sit on my shelf for long. ;)

I meant to get to this one last year but it didn't happen but I'm sure it won't take me long to get to it.

I know! It's just downright embarrassing I haven't gotten to these yet!

So, believe you me, there are a ton more I'd like to get to but I'm restricted to only listing ten. Now I just have to decide which one to read first...of the ones I can, of course.

Review: Lola and the Boy Next Door

Synopsis
Lola thought she was over Cricket Bell. She has a hot, new, rocker boyfriend and life is going good, until Cricket moves back in next door.

General thoughts
Well, after enjoying Anna and the French Kiss I knew I'd at least enjoy the writing and characters in any book Stephanie Perkins wrote but when I saw what this one was about I was very excited. I have a thing for stories about the boy next door. (No there's not some psychology behind that, I just do) Still, everyone was saying they liked Anna, better than this one so I started to worry. No need, this one was way better in my opinion. Yes, it's ridiculously romantic and sappy but I knew that's what I was getting into, so I just sat back and enjoyed the romance, the slightly unbelievable romance. Yes, Cricket was so freaking awesome I wanted to date him myself but I've never met anyone in real life like him. Unfortunately. :( I did have two problems with this one and they're just personal taste. One, I enjoyed seeing Anna and St Claire again but their part was almost too big. Anna had her story! It's Lola's turn! I also was impressed and irritated, at the same time, with Perkins' ability to make me yell out loud at the book, "Just kiss already!"

Characters
All Perkins' characters are real and memorable but since this one was primarily about Lola and Cricket I'll just share my opinion of them. Lola, was awesome, of course! I loved her style and drama. I even loved her imperfections. I don't think I have to tell you how much I ADORED Cricket but I will anyway. He was such a sweetheart. I think I'm in love!

Would I recommend it?
Yep! I most certainly would!

Yeah, the writing was pretty but it got a little bit on the overkill side.

A fun adventure but I never did get what the point of said adventure was.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
Dang my high expectations! No, it was good, just not as good as I thought it would be.

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt
My second time through it this year. I LOVE this book.

Existence by Abbi Glines
Mediocre but I liked it anyway.

Hourglass by Myra McEntire
Just overlook the things that didn't make logical sense and, yeah, it was fun.

Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
Oh, Cricket! *long dreamy sigh* Romantic and fun!

Favorite of the month was definitely Lola and the Boy Next Door followed closely by The Wednesday Wars and that's only because it was my second time through it. Least favorite of the month was, sadly, Shatter Me...and I had such high hopes. :(

Synopsis
Emerson has been seeing figments of the past since her parents tragic death. But when her brother hires a mysterious and handsome guy to help her, and he actually believes her, things start getting much stranger.

General thoughts
I'm going to have to break this one into things I liked and things I didn't cause I felt equally strong about both feelings. So, the things I like about this one......First off, I love the cover, it's one of the first things that drew me to the book. I liked the writing and was so happy it was in past tense; I'm getting so freaking sick of present tense books. The writing was good and witty. I liked Emerson's voice, and as things started picking up I found myself finally wanting to read again after a huge reading slump. I also liked the way the author handled Emerson accepting the things Michael was telling her. Paranormal abilities and how characters accept them is often ridiculously unbelievable. Not so, in this one.

And now for what I didn't like....The editing in this one felt lazy. At one point Michael opens a drink and slides it across the counter to Emerson but then, in the next sentence, she's popping open the can. Sure, sure it's something easily overlooked but it just bothers me when things like that are in books. Could they really not catch that before publishing? But my biggest problem with the book was the time travel. Time travel always confuses me and gives me a headache but, in the end, I usually feel like I understand what happened and why it all made sense. Yeah, not in this book. Sure, it's fiction you can make up what ever rules of time travel you want but I like stories to be well crafted. It makes me feel like the author cared enough about their book to make sure that things made sense, but I didn't feel that and it just makes me sad. Plus I hate, HATE when the "bad guy" starts giving a big speech at the end to explain their motives. It's incredibly amateurish writing and makes me feel like I'm watching old Saturday morning cartoons.

So, yeah I'll probably read the rest of the series but I hope the next books are slightly better crafted.

Characters
I know, I'm going on and on, but I had to mention three characters. Clary...er I mean Emerson....Need I say more? Michael is NOT my type. I hate that kind and I hated him! Kaleb on the other hand... *long dreamy sigh* He's what's making me continue this series even though I know he'll never end up with Emerson. Stupid love triangles that AREN'T love triangles!

Would I recommend it?
Yeah, I guess, just don't expect the time travel thing to make sense.

1. Best Book You Read In 2011?

The Neon Court (Matthew Swift 3) by Kate Griffin of course! Seriously, people, how much do I have to rave about this series until you pick it up?!

2. Most Disappointing Book/Book You Wish You Loved More Than You Did?

Oh, wow this is a toss up! Can I choose two? K, I'd have to go with Intertwined by Gina Showalter and Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken. Intertwined had the coolest sounding premise ever AND a male protagonist. I was so freaking excited to read it and all I got was bad writing and a book that dragged on and on! Brightly Woven could have been so good but I felt like the author got to obsessed with having her characters travel all over the map that came with her book and it took forever to get to the point.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2011?

The Ghost and the Goth by Stacy Kade. I thought the cover was funny and I thought it would be a light fluffy story so I bought it put it on my shelf and there it sat for quite awhile. I Finally picked it up this year and ended up LOVING it! It was light and funny, but well thought out and even had some depth to it. Don't you love that?!

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2011?

Holy crap, I'm always talking about The Matthew Swift series so I'd have to say those books but since no one has picked it up...that I know of...I'd also say the Curse Workers series.

5. Best series you discovered in 2011?

The Shade series by Jeri Smith-Ready. I've discovered others and liked them too but the Shade series takes the cake!

6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2011?

New to me? Jeri Smith-Ready, Rebecca Lim, Dan Wells, Sara Zarr. And it's not just cause I liked their books. It's because they actually know how to write.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

Well, either I didn't read a genre I usually don't or there isn't a genre I won't read cause I can't think of a book I read that was out of my comfort zone. I can say I wouldn't have read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith if my book club hadn't read it and I liked it so maybe that can count.

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2011?

Literally? The DUFF by Kody Keplinger. I started reading it one night and stayed up all night to read it. I could NOT put it down.

9. Book you most anticipated in 2011?

The Neon Court by Kate Griffin. It's the third is a series and I was so freaking excited waiting for it.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2011?

Well, I think I'll have to got with Existence by Abbi Glines. I don't know why but I just love it!

11. Most memorable character in 2011?

There's a lot of FAVORITE new characters but if I had to choose one that was memorable I'd say Holling Hoodhood from The Wednesday Wars.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2011?

Kate Griffin (The Matthew Swift series) writes amazingly but I also loved Rebecca Lim's (Mercy) writing too.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2011?

I re-read Getting the Girl by Markus Zusak and cried the whole way through it. I just LOVE that book. It's one of those books that you swear was written just for you.

14. Book you can't believe you waited UNTIL 2011 to finally read?

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. N'uff said.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2011?

I'm not sure. I'm not a highlighting reader I just smile at beautiful sentences and move on. I'd have to agree with my friend Suey and say Markus Zusak probably takes the cake in the writing department.

16. Book That You Read In 2011 That Would Be Most Likely To Reread In 2012?

Oh man, a lot! the Curse Workers series. The Ghost and the Goth. Heck, I might even re-read the Matthew Swift series again this year.

Markus Zusak signing for sure! It was so freaking awesome to actually meet him and see him in person and have him sign my books. He was so nice and personable that it just made it that much better.

Uh, I'd say just getting started blogging was probably the best. But meeting all you awesome bloggers is my favorite part too.

General thoughts
This was my very first ebook! K, I'm just excited I have the Kindle app on my phone. ;) Anywho, as it was only published as an ebook and by a publishing company that only publishes ebooks I somehow got it into my head it was going to be mediocre. And it was, it had plenty of grammatical errors and a lot of telling not showing, and about half way through I completely lost interest, but I persisted all the way to the end...all the way to the, holy hell, cliffhanger ending!!! Yeah, there was quite a cliffhanger ending that had me rolling my eyes more than anything else. The whole thing inspired a lot of eye rolling. It just didn't exactly make sense and the story itself could have used some editing. Still, despite all that, I adore the cover and I have a massive weakness for stories about Death as a person. It's what drew me to the book in the first place and kept me reading. I liked that despite how "simple" it was I had no idea where it was going to go and that kept me reading as well. So, yeah, it wasn't amazing, in fact it was pretty bad, but I enjoyed it anyway.

Characters
Pagan was way too much like Bella from Twilight for my taste. She seemed weak and willing to do anything for someone she hardly knew. Dank (despite his name) was dreamy albeit a little unbelievable as a guy and Leif was ridiculously amiable. NO ONE is that nice! Miranda was pretty dang cliche.

Would I recommend it?
I can't in good conscience recommend it but if you're interested in the premise then, yes, you might enjoy it about as much as I did.

Review: Anna Dressed In Blood

First sentence The grease-slicked hair is a dead give away-no pun intented.

Synopsis
Cassius Theseus Lowood has more that just a strange name, he hunts and kills ghosts. An occupation he inherited from his now deceased father. Traveling from town to town with his witch mother and their cat he's about to meet a ghost unlike any other before.

General thoughts
First off, this was EXACTLY the kind of book I needed to get out of my reading slump. It was fast paced and exciting and had a fun mystery to keep you turning pages. There was a slow bit in the middle that felt too meandering for the rest of the story's pace, but once I got over that, things picked up again. I was all prepared for it to be incredibly gory and full of cuss words and, yeah, I guess I'm just way too tainted cause I hardly noticed all that. So, if that's why you're not reading this one, it wasn't THAT bad. Unfortunately this is me, and I'm easily disappointed so, yes, I have complaints. To begin with I was tired of all the "telling". Cass is a loner. Cass doesn't want friends. Cass doesn't know why he's hanging out with all these people now, why he's making friends and caring about them. See? It kept telling us over and over that he was a loner and he wasn't at all! And then, telling aside, it was bugging me that he was supposed to be a loner and he really wasn't; I liked the idea of a lone ghost hunter guy. All, brooding and misunderstood. Sigh. What a let down. Obviously this is a trilogy, or at least has a sequel so I was bothered that the "other ghost" even had a part in this one. It seemed like too many things crammed into one book. I was also bothered by the insta-love but I always am, so no surprise there. ;)

Characters
I was so excited that we were getting a male protagonist in this one, but Cas just wasn't entirely believable as a guy to me. When a female author is writing from a guy's POV it had better be believable. I just didn't think it was in this case; throwing in a few cuss words does not a believable guy make! The rest of the characters felt a little too cookie cutter for me and that's never a good thing. However, this just proves that I'm much more about plot than characters, don't you think? Cause I did like this one for it's plot, just not it's characters. Oh, and all the telling.

Would I recommend it?
Yeah, with a shrug and an apathetic, "sure".

Do High Expectations Lead To Disappointment?

I could do a whole post about this and how it applies to life, but since this is mostly a book blog, and I don't want to depress you with my "life theories", I'll stick to bookish relevance....You're welcome. ;)

We've all been there, waiting for that book that sounds so amazing. Eagerly reading reviews that are raving about said book. Everyone seems to be talking about it, and, at long last, we get our hands on it and begin to read; our expectations high enough to raise the roof.

Here's where we run into trouble. If we're lucky we love the book as much as we wanted to; as much as everyone else, but sometimes, lets face it, we're left wondering, what the hell?!

The question that's bouncing around my head is this: Is it those high expectations that are ruining the book for us? Had we gone into it with less feverish expectancy would we have enjoyed it more? And if so, does that mean we should be eternal pessimistic readers?

I've gone into plenty of books with high expectations that everyone said I'd love that I did, in fact, end up loving (Harry Potter, The Hunger Games) but it usually seems that if my expectations are too high I end up being disappointed. However, I've also had absolutely NO expectation about a book and ended up hating it as well. So, DO our expectations effect our feelings about books?

What say you? And if it is high expectations ruining books for us how on earth do we lower those expectations without being a depressing pessimistic?

Welcome to the new Sunday Salon. A weekly update post about my boring life. ;)

Weather Small Talk: Just weird! There's heavy low clouds hinting of snow but it's too cold to snow. Everything is frosted over. It's quite lovely, but I can't figure out what on earth the weather is doing.

On The Idiot Box: Not much new TV as it's almost Christmas but there's all those warm fuzzy Hallmark\Lifetime\ABCfamily movies to amuse. The funny thing is, I haven't watched even one yet. I'll have to rectify that this week.

Weekly Reads: I've kinda put Inheritance on the back burner and I finished off The Wednesday Wars and 13 Little Blue Envelopes. I've started reading Existence and Anna Dressed in Blood. Both are entertaining so far.

Crazy Kitty: She's been very well behaved with my Christmas tree and yet, somehow, she still keeps getting sap on her fur.

This Week: I had my family Christmas party Saturday and we had fun. We made gingerbread houses.

Here's mine. And, no, I wouldn't really lick it.

Some people had a bit of trouble. ;)

Movie of the Week: Nothing new and exciting. I did watch The Nativity Story. If you haven't seen this one you should. I love the story but I love the romance. ;) Hmmm, is that sacrilegious?

Food Talk: Holy Yum. Jessica brought some shortbread to book club and I've been obsessed ever since. I even dreamed about it, people! I made some this morning with whole wheat...sooooo good!!!

Soccer Sightings: Due to my Christmas party I missed my game. :( It's probably just as well, since they wore that red that bugs me so much again. They did win, though.

Music Discoveries: Alright, in honor of Christmas I thought I should do a Christmas song. I've decided this is, by far, my favorite version of White Christmas.

Plans For The Week: I have one more gift to buy, but other that that I plan on taking it easy. Maybe I'll finish the Zelda game I've been playing. ;)

Review: 13 Little Blue Envelopes

First sentence Dear Ginger, I have never been a great follower of rules.

Synopsis
After her eccentric artist aunt passes away, Ginny receives a package from her. It contains 13 numbered envelopes, each with a task to complete. They lead Ginny on a wild adventure across Europe where she learns more about her aunt and more about herself.

General thoughts
I've heard so many good things about this book that I purchased it at the Borders store closing sale and there it has sat on my shelf for the past five months. I felt like an adventurous yet light read so I picked it up and read it rather quickly this week. Considering the all consuming depression slump I've been in, the fact that it only took me two days to read this book speaks volumes about its quality. It was just the sort of book I was in need of. I enjoyed traveling all across Europe with Ginny and was eagerly waiting for her to read each new letter from her aunt to see what it was all leading up to. Sigh, and, yes, maybe it's my current mood, but I did have some issues with the book. Firstly being the convenience. I hate books that have little facts thrown in just so the story is easier to tell, like Ginny's great sense of direction. I was bothered with how quickly and conveniently she fell for Keith and how their relationship just sort of sprung up out of nowhere. Plus, I just don't like guys like Keith. Sure, they're easy going and relaxed but it makes me wonder if they're truly capable of being in a relationship. Guys like him just don't seem to care about anything deeply enough to actually care about someone...for long. Anywho, the ending was a bit of a let down for me, as well, and I felt like the whole book in general had some deep meaning that I just wasn't getting. That's because I really don't think there was a meaning but what do I know? So, yeah, I really did like reading and enjoying it but in the end it was just OK. I will read the sequel, though, that's something. ;)

Characters
The Characters were very well fleshed out. Each had a distinct real personality and reason for existing. I admire that in books. Ginny, herself, was a little too passive for me. Everything just happened TO her. Maybe that was that whole deep thing I missed but it bothered me.

Would I recommend it?
Yeah, it was good enough. But if you do read it and take some great meaning away from it, will you tell me? Cause I was just confused.

Review: The Wednesday Wars

First sentence Of all the kids in the seventh grade at Camillo Junior High, there was one kid that Mrs. Baker hated with heat whiter than the sun.

Synopsis
The adventures of a seventh grader, Holling Hoodhood, in the late 60's.

General thoughts
This is the second time through this book and I was excited to read it again for book club. I LOVED it the first time through. It's hilarious and sweet and such a fun read. It's hard to find anyone who doesn't like this one. This time through, and it might have been my mood, I found myself a little more skeptical at how well things worked out for Holling all the time. Don't get me wrong, I still thoroughly enjoyed this books and still laughed my way through it, I just noted that it was slightly unbelievable. Of course then I started thinking why that fact was bugging me. Would it have been any more realistic with things not working out? Plenty of bad things happen in this book, they just end up turning out OK. My own life has been pretty much the same so why should I complain? So I shoved away any negative feelings and just enjoyed it again. Anywho, my own personal insights aside, you really should read this book. It's incredibly well written, has unforgettable characters and some amazing lessons. It's one of those books you read and then want to buy for everyone you know so they'll read it too.

Characters
As I said, these characters are unforgettable. I still remembered them and loved them from the first time I read it. you won't find a cliched character anywhere within the pages.

Would I recommend it?
Oh, yes, and if you don't take my advice and read it, I'll have to start buying copies and shoving them at you.

Weather Small Talk: No snow all week and it's been soooooo cold!

Weekly Reads: I'm having such a hard time reading lately! I'm STILL working on Inheritance and I started re-reading The Wednesday Wars for book club this week. I LOVE The Wednesday Wars! Maybe it'll break this slump.

Crazy Kitty: Wow, I think my kitty has been as depressed as me this week. :(

This Week: I got a new phone...a smartphone! I'm enjoying learning how to use it. And that was the highlight of my week. :( Pretty sad, huh?

Movie of the Week: I went and saw Hugo. Loved the music! I haven't read the books so I had nothing to compare it to but I liked it. It was a little long, though.

Food Talk: I'm going to make my Christmas gingerbread cookies this week. I'm going to substitute whole wheat flour instead of white...I hope it turns out.

Soccer Sightings: Ugh, Real Madrid lost against Barcelona. Why? Why?!

Music Discoveries: I'm still obsessing over Christina Perri. You have to listen to this one just to the chorus so you can hear the piano. So pretty!

Plans For The Week: Finish my Christmas shopping! Exercise! I get to go to book club, yay! And My family's Christmas party is this weekend.

Something In The Air

Yeah, that's what it is, there's something in the air. I'm having the hardest time reading or blogging lately. I can blame it on Christmas but I just don't think that's it. My good friend Suey is having the same problem and she lives in the same city as me. See? Something in the air.

So, since I have nothing bookish to talk about. I thought I'd talk about soccer. Please, please calm down, I know you're excited. ;)

Today Real Madrid will be playing Barcelona. If you remember, which I doubt you do, (that's OK) there's a huge rivalry between these two teams and it's always exciting to watch these games. Wish em luck!

Also, I'm so crushing on this handsome fellow. So, now you get to enjoy.

His name is Callejon, and he just transferred to Real Madrid this season. Look at that waist line!!! Did I mention I have a thing for waist lines along with calves?

He's not a bad player either. He scored twice this last Wednesday. Now, if I could just find a picture of him without a shirt on. ;)

TV Addict Reading Challenge

K, just look at that challenge name...does that not describe me to a T? I'm so obsessed with TV and I love reading so when I saw this challenge over at Belle's Bookshelf I just had to sign up for it.

The idea is to read a series of books that a TV show is based on. Belle has a list on her blog you should go check it out and join us...you know you want to. ;)

I'm actually going to just read one series and it's one that's not even on her list.

I watched this show on TV this summer and while it's a little hokey I'm interested to see how the books compare. So, yes, I've signed up for another challenge even though I said I wasn't doing any. :) Where's my willpower?!

By Popular Demand, A Night With Christopher Paolini

Alright it wasn't THAT popular of demand but a few of you asked how the night with Christopher Paolini went. I'm a loser and never bring a camera to these things so I wasn't going to post about it but thanks to Suey, who did take pictures, I'll can share some pictures.Thanks, Suey!

After arriving 2 and 1/2 hours before the event started we got there to wait in line...yeah it was that crazy! There were probably at least 50 people ahead of us and by 6:30, when they let us in, the line was very, very long! Crazy! People were dressed up in medieval garb and when Christopher got there they played a fanfare and had a sword salute to welcome him. Holy nerdy-ness!

See, long ago, when I first picked up Eragon, the first book in the series, I saw the picture of Christopher and after noting how young he was I concluded that, yes, indeed, he looked exactly like the kind of guy that would write an epic fantasy. Now don't get mad and call me some kind of nerd racist, I'm a nerd myself, so I can say that. Besides look at him.

See? He's a bit nerdy looking. Anywho, after listening too him talk about his books, and read from his book in an overly dramatic voice, and answer questions, my previous impression of him was proven to be true; he's a nerd. ;) It was a total blast! A total nerdy blast!

The signing went well. He's the first author who I've ever seen sign THAT fast and still manage to make eye contact and small talk with each person.

My favorite part of the evening was when he was leaving the room where he had given his speech and some girl in the crowd yelled out, "will you marry me?!" Why did it amuse me? Because that exact thing happened to his character Eragon in the second book. Alright it wasn't THAT funny, but it was a little amusing.

Synopsis

Locked in a cell alone for nearly a year life is routine and lonely but it's about to change, when a handsome boy is locked up with her. Suddenly her curse is being called a gift and everyone wants to use her for their own desires.

General thoughts
Alright, people. I'm sorry, this one had a great premise going for it and, yes, some nice writing, but I had some issues. Before I name them, though, I wanted to say, I didn't hate this book. I enjoyed it enough to read the rest of the books in the series. Now, with that out of the way, let me tell you why it bugged me. Everyone has been raving about this one and how freaking amazing the writing was. So what the heck was my problem? The writing was good...for about two seconds. Then I wanted to shout, "shut up and just tell the dang story! If you're going to cross out sentences why bother writing them at all?! Quit repeating words over and over! Come up with some new phrases! Argh!" Further more, the whole style conflicted with the story. You have this fast paced exiting story littered with so much slow flowery writing it just wasn't meshing! And then came the lack of conflict. But, Jenny, they're was conflict. Warner was trying to use her for his own evil wishes, and society was way messed up, and she couldn't touch anyone!!! You can yell at me all you want, but let's look at these points, shall we? We were told Warner was freaky and smart, so smart he was in charge of a sector at only 19, but he wasn't smart, or evil, or even dangerous. They easily escaped him! Juliette sorta kinda, liked him??? Maybe??? Whatever THAT was. The society was hardly even talked about. I'm not sure why things were the way they were, it was never explained very well and I'm not exactly sure how they're supposed to be fixing it. I don't really care either; I'm sure that will be explained later...hopefully. But the biggest nonconflicting thing of all: The WUUUUV of her life could touch her???? Oh how convenient! Phew! I don't think I coulda handled there being any actual conflict! So, yeah, see why it wasn't THAT amazing after all? Not the worst thing I've read but come on!!!

Characters
So, what did I think of all those characters? Juliette was pretty stupid. Sorry, but Adam had to tell her he loved her twice and she still didn't get why he was rescuing her. Looks like all that time in the dark cell knocked a few brain cells loose. And speaking of Adam, he just wasn't swoon worthy for me...at all! It's not his fault, he's just not my type. And what was up with Warner? Did the author want us to sorta like him? Was that supposed to be a lead up to a love triangle? I felt like even the author didn't have a good hold on who Warner was.

Would I recommend it?
Oh, I'm sure people will just eat this one up, a lot of people already have so, yeah, go ahead and read it...I guess! ;)

Weather Small Talk: We finally got a little snow, just a skiff and it's all melted now.

On The Idiot Box: Not too many new shows this week. The mid season finale of Supernatural was on Friday night but I was at the Christopher Paolini signing so I didn't see it. I'll have to catch up on that one later today.

Weekly Reads: After all that stress about finishing the Inheritance books on time I didn't. :( Oh well, it was starting to ruin them for me so I took it easy. I did manage to finish Brisingr and started the fourth book.

Crazy Kitty: Maybe she's trying to get warm or my nagging about her weight has gotten to her, but she's been super frisky lately. Chasing all her balls around and going bezerk when I get the laser pointer out. She keeps pulling little pieces of my bathroom rug out and playing with them too.

Movie of the Week: I let myself be convinced into going to see Arthur Christmas.(I did NOT want to see it) I was pleasantly surprised. It was really funny and besides, the cute James Mcavoy did the voice of Arthur.

Food Talk: I'm so obsessed with provolone cheese at the moment. I can't help but feel bad for anyone that has to be around me after I've consumed it, though. It does kinda smell like barf. ;)

Soccer Sightings: So my favorite current player for Real Madrid started in the game yesterday and came oh so very close to scoring but was thwarted at the last moment. :( After he got substituted they showed him on the bench with the saddest expression. I hate when they show us that! I'm thinking they need someone to sit on the bench during games and comfort those poor boys cause, unlike the coach, I'd do it for free. ;)

Music Discoveries: This isn't a new discovery for me but I'm posting it for you, Suey. ;) So now you can shake your head in concern that this is my favorite Muse song.

Question of the Week: I'm trying to serve more but, in my opinion, serving is not easy. It's mind numbing misery that should make you want to die! Is that a messed up way of thinking? It's hard to put myself through that every day but just smiling at someone or making a phone call to a depressed friend just doesn't feel like service to me.

General thoughts
This was only the second time I've read this one. When I read it before I was slightly disappointed with the slow parts and the knowledge that it wasn't going to be the last book in the series. Maybe knowing that the next and last one is out and waiting for me helped, or maybe I've just matured more and can appreciate the relationships despite some lack of action, but I enjoyed it better this time. That's not to say the slow parts weren't still pretty freaking slow but they weren't as long as I remembered them being. Re-reading these has been, at times frustrating, but all in all enjoyable and I'm so excited to get to the fourth one...AT LAST! The thing I truly love about this whole series is the growth of the characters. It's something you can actually see throughout all the books. Every book should have that, yet, sadly, most don't. I appreciated it in these books. More so this time around. Maybe it's because I want to see some personal growth in my own life. Hmmm. ;)

Characters
I'm love how close Eragon and Saphira are but I love how much closer they get in this one and how it makes you really appreciate...um an event that takes place at the end. ;) Sorry, don't want to spoil anything. I'm interested in the developments in Eragon and Arya's relationship even though I'd rather he didn't end up with her. Yeah, that's right, you heard me. I don't want Eragon to end up with Arya! I love the characters in this series and I'm so excited to see how everything turns our for all of them.

Would I recommend it?
Yes, of course. Just remember this one is a little slow, but worth sticking with.

Hangs On A Cliffhanger

As we all know there are a LOT of series coming out lately, especially trilogies in YA books. Am I right? Anywho, with all those trilogies we're often faced with the dreaded cliffhanger ending.

Whether the cliffhanger endings are to "trick" us into reading the next book or books in the series, or because that's just the way it had to end it's, always frustrating. However I've noticed around the blogosphere lately, with bloggers who rate what they read, that they'll take a star (or whatever they rate with) away just because the books had a cliffhanger ending. As if that diminished how amazing the book was?! Huh? Is it because they feel like the author just did it to ensure they'd continue with the series or, in their frustrations, are they're just punishing the poor book who otherwise was amazing but just happened to leave them hanging? Either way I'm not sure I understand the reasoning.

I get that cliffhangers are annoying, I really do. There's nothing worse than realizing that all can not be resolved in the amount of pages left but at least you know there's something more to come. (even if it is a year or more away) Right?

All I'm saying is: Should your overall opinion of the book really hang on that cliffhanger? Should that one tiny flaw actually lessen the books reputation in your mind?

So, what say you? Should I get off the old soap box? Do you let a cliffhanger ending ruin the whole book for you? Or does it just whet your appetite for more?

Weather Small Talk: It's cold, cold, cold but no snow...yet.

On The Idiot Box: With it being Thanksgiving week here in the US not many new shows were on. So I've been watching old re-runs of Myth Busters. Love those guys!

Weekly Reads: Ugh! I have to keep reminding myself I WANTED to re-read the Inheritance series. I'm enjoying it but I'm getting soooo overwhelmed trying to finish it on time. Did I mention the author is coming to my local library on Friday? Cause he is, and I really want to be done with them all by then. I finished Eldest and am re-reading Brisinger but I'm going to have to read 200+ pages a day to finish it and Inheritance by Friday. So Shatter Me is on the back burner and it might be a little quiet around here this week.

Crazy Kitty: It's my fault! She kept bugging me all night on Friday and it wasn't till I got up the next morning that I realized why. She was all out of food. :(

Movie of the Week: I saw J. Edgar with my mother on Friday...ugh! It was supposed to be about the history of the man and how he started the FBI. At least that's what I thought. It ended up going on and on about how supposedly he was gay. Whatever! I will say I was so freaking impressed with the make up, though. Check it out! That's Leonardo Decaprio, people!

Food Talk: You know when you get to gorge on the holidays? Ignore the diet for one day? Yeah, well I waiting all week for Thursday (Thanksgiving) and then gorged...for like two seconds. I was so full I felt sick the rest of the day! Sigh!

Soccer Sightings: After working out on Tuesday I didn't have time to shower before my soccer game so I flipped on the TV and started watching, figuring I'd shower at half time. 8 minutes in my boys had already scored three times. :) I went and showered. By the time I got out they'd scored again! Way to go, guys! (in case you don't know...that's nearly unheard of!)

Music Discoveries: Wow! I heard this one on the radio the other day...How have I not heard of Christina Perri? Now I'm loving a bunch of her songs!

Question of the Week: Is it crazy that I went to the Walmart's Black Friday sale at 10:00 PM, had to park in a completely different parking lot, hike all the way to the store, swim through masses of people only to find that the item I wanted was sold out and to just buy cat food? I'm kinda thinking yeah. ;) I kinda felt like screaming at the top of my lungs, while holding up the bag of cat food, "I got it. I got it! Mwha ha ha!"

General thoughts
I think this is the third time I've read this book but it was the first time I really noticed all the similarities between it and LOTR and Star Wars. I guess I'm not very smart because lot's of people were outraged at this and hate the series because of it. Now that I have noticed it I'm still not bothered. I can see the influence of these books and movies on this series but I see the influence of Twilight and The Hunger Games in more books than I care to mention. I think when you grow up surrounded by a certain book or movie that's popular at the time you're going to be influenced. K, now that I've weighed in on that I'll get onto the review. I still stand by my previous opinions. I like this book. I like this series. It has great characters you care about. Adventure and excitement. Heartbreak and romance and even a touch of humor. It's just a great epic fantasy!

Characters
I love how we get to see the progression of Roran and how he becomes the man he does. I ADORE the relationship between Eragon and Saphira, it's what keeps bringing me back to this series over and over.

Would I recommend it?
Yes, and don't be all close minded about it because it has some similarities to other books! Sheesh!

Yes, this handsome fellow, Markus Zusak. We'd have tons and tons of yummy foods and desserts and he'd have hours and hours just to sit and talk to me about, oh, everything! Yeah, he's handsome and so amazingly talented that I might be very nervous, but I think he'd make me feel at ease in no time, and then would come all the talking. And, oh, the conversations we'd have!

Alright, alright! But a girl can dream can't she? I do have other authors I'd love to sit down with too.

Classic Double Challenge 2012

K, I won't be participating in a ton of challenges this year but when Melissa from One Librarian's Book Reviews came up with this challenge I figured I could handle it. Plus I think it's an interesting challenge. Want to know what it is? Well, if you look very closely at the button up there you'll see that the "bread" is Pride and Prejudice and a retelling of P&P, Enthusiasm. Is it making sense yet? So, you read a classic and then either a retelling or a book that is closely related to that classic. What do you think? I think it's going to be a blast. This isn't just a challenge that you read a certain amount of books in a certain genre, but one were you get to do a fun post where you compare the two books. How interesting will that be? I'm excited!

Weather Small Talk: It snowed last night for the first time...well, in my city. Sigh, I guess winter is here.

On The Idiot Box: I missed a few shows this week. I'll have to catch up on them later. Can I just say how obsessed I am with The Big Bang Theory? I started watching it when they started playing reruns and it's so funny.

Weekly Reads: I finished A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I was a little worried I wouldn't manage in time for book club, but no worries. I'm still working on Eldest as part of my rereading and I got Shatter Me in the mail and just had to start reading it straight away. So far, so good.

Crazy Kitty: Buns has taken to sleeping under the covers again. Does that mean it really IS as cold in my apartment as I think it is???

Movie of the Week: I didn't see any movies this week. :( How very boring. In my defense it was a crazy week and I hardly had time for anything.

Food Talk: Ugh, I've been eating like crap because of the above mentioned craziness and it's back to the diet for me! I did make a sauteed veggies and ham with whole wheat pasta and parmesan cheese and spices dish. It's so easy and REALLY good.

Soccer Sightings: Whilst in Salt Lake this afternoon, for my brothers wedding, I saw a Soccer store and immediately pulled into the parking lot. I FINALLY got a window decal for my car and a 2012 Calender of all my boys. Whoo hoo!

Music Discoveries: I've jumped on to the bandwagon a little late and have been listening to this one all week. It's great for working out to.

Question of the Week: Ugh, is there an easy way to eat healthy when you're running around like crazy and hardly ever home?!

Review: A Tree Grows In Brooklyn

General thoughts
Well, for those of you who thought I wouldn't make it, that I'd be too tempted to play my new Wii instead of finish this book I say, HA! It took me all day yesterday but I finished it. I have mixed feelings, though. I loved the book. I loved that in each character you could find something to love and something to hate. That's so incredibly true in reality, and was captured so well here, that I think that became my favorite thing about the book. I also loved the slow reminiscing feel of it. I smiled a lot, had a touch of heart ache and even burst into sobs at one point. My only problem with the book was I kept wondering if it was so close to the author's own life why didn't she just right it as a memoir? After I finished the book I read the forward (backwards, I know) and found out it was originally written as a memoir but upon request of the editor was made into fiction. That made me feel better, but then I started wondering how much was fiction and how much was truth? When she changed it into a fiction did she embellish or just change the names??? It doesn't tell you and that bothered me to no end!!!

Characters
As I said before, I loved that each character had something to love and something to hate about them. I think Johnny and Sissy were my favorites but I don't know if I'm completely sure about that. If I forget the story, and I probably will, I won't forget these characters and how they made me feel.

Would I recommend it?
Yes, this one should be read. If for nothing else but the perfectly flawed characters and the hundreds of messages to be taken away.

Quit Distracting Me, I'm Reading!

Virtual Author Book Tour

I knew I'd be interested to read this one but when was another matter entirely. So...I had my mom read it for me and she will be my guest reviewer. Thanks mom!

Jenny asked me to read this book as a guest reviewer. I have never reviewed a book before so I really have no idea as to format or anything else for a review so I'll just start at the beginning and say what I thought as I read it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the court scenes and arguments presented. (one gets a quite a bit of practive "lawyering" with eleven children) I also enjoyed the sense of humor for handling "awkward" situations. I agreed with a statement in the book that, "just because it's legal doesn't mean it's moral.", but there was too much explicit, graphical sex. I am not a " prude". ( I have eleven children, for goodness sake, and enjoyed getting them here.) I simply believe that intimacy should be intimate and within marriage not splashed all over the pages of a book. Others are entitled to their opinions but I would not want this book in my library where my children could read it.

This is a political book and it could be propaganda for environmentalism. I agree with the author that multinational big business, big government, the legal system, etc., are corrupt and that we as individuals should work to clean them up. I also believe that environmentalism, unions, etc., are also corrupt and should be exposed and cleaned up by we the people. There are two sides to every coin that should be explored in all political situations.

So I enjoyed the humor and court scenes and thought it was a well written entertaining read, but it's hard to like a book when you don't agree with the politics. I'll be interested to see what others thought, though.

Weather Small Talk: It's been overcast and rainy and cold. Perfect fall weather! Agreed?

On The Idiot Box: Why the blazes is The Vampire Diaries having it's mid season finale already? Argh! I was hoping for something to happen between Damon and Elaina but no! Supernatural was a silly filler episode but those are often the most enjoyable ones. But, ah, the look on Dean face when Sam said he was getting married. Too funny!

Weekly Reads: I finished The River Between Us by Richard Peck and Fang by James Patterson, both quick reads and started Eldest by Christopher Paolini and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Crazy Kitty: Buns has now figured out that it's me controlling the laser pointer she plays with but instead of losing interest she now insists I play with her every night. She sits and stares expectantly at me every night before I go to bed waiting for me to pull it out.

Movie of the Week: I saw Tower Heist this week and, though it didn't look too great in the previews, I loved it! It was hilarious and had a great ending. Any one else seen it yet?

Food Talk:
I made some whole wheat and honey pumpkin cookies with butterscotch and milk chocolate chips. Really good but I have way too many left!

Soccer Sightings: Sigh, my boys are off playing with their international teams so I didn't have a game this week but here's a hot pic anyway. ;)

Music Discoveries: I heard this on The Secret Circle, a show I don't particularly like but watch anyways. Yeah, I'm weird that way. Anywho, I thought the song was kinda cool in a depressing sort of way. ;) BTW, the video is psycho but whatever.

Finally! My Take on e-Readers

I know, you've read tons of blog posts on e-Readers. Some for them and some against them, but I know you've all been dying to know my take on them. So here goes.

Pros
-First and foremost, the amount of books you can carry with you in one small, light weight device. Very nice!
-The amount of FREE books you can download.
-Digital freaks are being tricked into reading. ;)
-Some let you subscribe to magazines.
-You can read them in the dark.

Cons
Just one really...I can't help but wonder when that huge apocalypse come, (cause we all know it's coming) and two weeks later your e-Reader battery dies, and there's no power to charge the battery, then what will you do?! Huh? Huh?!

I tease, I tease. I just can't help but think of that every time people go on and on about how great e-Readers are.

By the by, even solar powered ones would be rendered useless if some pollution cloud was covering the earth, or the sun blew up etc, etc.

Synopsis
Things are getting pretty crazy for Max. In Africa she meets yet another psycho doctor wanting to experiment on her and he's already experimenting on others. He's created another bird kid, a bird kid who's gorgeous and supposedly Max's perfect match. But Max is with Fang, her one true love, but according to Angel, Fang might not be around for much longer. Just another day in the life of Maximum Ride.

General thoughts
These books are so ridiculous. I loved the first three in the series but they've gotten a little bit agenda heavy and the writing leaves something to be desired. Their saving grace is the great characters. I had a hard time getting into this one, probably because I just wasn't in the mood, but once I got back into the swing of things and remembered all the fun characters and their personalities, it became a lot more enjoyable. So, yeah, the writing is silly, you can't walk away with out a 'save the earth' message being shoved down your throat, but if you like characters and crazy adventures these books are just fun.

Max, Come on, you have to like Max. She kicks butt and loves fiercely.
Fang, Dark, silent, brooding. What's not to love?
Iggy, I think I'm developing a little crush on him, I wish he'd be highlighted more...without all the angst, of course.

Yeah, the fourth one was annoying but the rest are just fun...once you get past the writing. ;)

Having A Bad Day?

Everybody has miserable, crappy, no good, rotten days. I have them quite regularly, and when I'm having that kind of day I want a hug. I once read that hugging someone for 30 seconds relieves stress and lowers your blood pressure. I can agree with that, but I can't help but think a hug from this guy could cause even more stress relief.

Ha ha, you thought this was a serious post. ;) The sad thing is I totally AM being serious, this guy (Kaka) gives the best hugs. Don't believe me? Look...

Seriously, this guy should quit professional soccer and become a professional hugger instead. He'd take a huge pay cut but come on! Admit it, you wanna hug from him now too, don't you?

This is the first Richard Peck book I've ever read and I've heard good things about him. I'm happy to say I agree with all of Richard Peck's fans. This one was a historical fiction about more than just the civil war. I found it all very interesting. Unfortunately I didn't LOVE this book, but I didn't hate it. It was just a fast, interesting read. I read it in one sitting and enjoyed the writing; laughed out loud a few times and got a little choked up too. I'm just afraid it won't be very memorable which is a shame cause it was quite good.

Characters
Tilly, Very relatable teen girl. Even back then she had the same feelings teen girls have now.
Delphine, I tend to be bothered by girls like this, but Peck handled her well and I found myself liking her.
Calinda, I always admire girls like her.
Noah, Typical teen guy. ;)
Cass, Heartbreaking story, I wished she could have had a happier ending.

Would I recommend it?
Yes, it's a quick interesting read and Peck is a very talented writer.

Outside my window: It's a dark brisk lovely fall night.

I am listening to: Nothing new this week.

I am watching: So I tried watching Once Upon A Time but it just wasn't very impressive. I'm liking Grimm better but even it's a little weird.

I am thinking: My brain is still back in the nap I took today and I don't know how I'm up and functioning.

I am grateful for: FINALLY learning how to breathe properly while jogging! Seriously. I finally get what an exercise high is!

I am reading: I haven't read anything for three days! EEEK! I've been busy with family stuff this weekend and I'm reading Fang by James Patterson and it's just not good enough to keep

me glued.

I am photographing: My nephews Halloween costumes.

I am listing: Well, when my brain starts working I'm going to come up with some fun new topics for this post. Maybe. ;)

Around the house: All the leaves from my neighbors trees have dumped their leaves all over my driveway. Believe it or not I wasn't horribly upset about it and had planned to clean them up tomorrow when I heard said neighbor out there tonight sweeping them up! How nice! I thanked him and I'll have to bring them cookies.

From the kitchen: It's that time of year again! I love, love, love this kind of ice cream and went on quite the adventure to get

my hands on it!

One of my favorite things: Finally being in my own place. I love my family but after spending time with them and all those kids, it's so nice to be able to come home to a QUIET apartment.

The children this week: No kids just my cat Buns and she did the funniest most human thing last week. I was playing with one of those laser pointers and she was chasing the light and pounced on it right as I turned it off. When I pointed the light back on about a foot away from her she did a double take and then slowly peeked under her paws. She was so sure she had caught that tricksy light. ;)

Plans for the week: I need to get some reading done. Plus it's my sisters birthday and I believe we're going to see a movie.

Synopsis
When Eragon discovers the strange blue stone he found in the mountains isn't a stone at all but a dragon egg he begins the adventure of a lifetime as the first dragon rider the land has had for over a hundred years.

General thoughts
I've read this book I believe four times now and it never changes. It's as exciting and fun every time. I love the whole idea of this story. I've always been fond of stories about someone that is special, someone important and unique. (I'm sure a therapist would have lots of fun with that) Anywho, this is one of my favorite series and I loved it as much this time around as the first time I read it. If you like fantasy and haven't read this series...Oh my gosh get off your butt and go read it. ;)

Eragon, I don't think it hurts that Paolini wrote this when he was 15, it makes for a very realistic character in Eragon.
Saphira, ADORE her. Who wouldn't?
Brom, A wonderful teacher and mentor for Eragon.
Murtagh, *Long, dreamy, sad, sigh*
Arya, Slightly uppity but I think that's what Paolini was going for.
