Review: The Goddess Test

Title The Goddess Test
By Aimee Carter
For Fun
Source I own it

Synopsis
Kate has been taking care of her mother, who is dying from caner, for several years. When her mother wants to go to Eden, the town she grew up in, to live out the rest of her days, Kate can't say no. But Eden isn't what it seems and when the mysterious Henry shows up and offers Kate a deal to keep her mother alive, Kate can't resist. All she has to do is live with Henry for six months and pass some tests. With her mothers life on the line, Kate agrees.

General thoughts
First of all, this whole story, in case you didn't know, is based on the mythology of Hades and Persephone. I love Mythology and I've always found the story of those two quite interesting. So, I was anxious to get to this book, even though I'm having a meltdown from too much YA at the moment. One of the first things that drew me into this fun book was that it was written in first person past tense! That was a relief, I'm getting so sick of first person present tense I could scream. While I noticed a few things that could have made better sense, I enjoyed this story. It wasn't quite what I was expecting but that's a good thing.

Characters
Kate was almost too perfect. I loved it. She was selfless and compassionate and stood up for herself which is lacking in so many lead female characters lately that it's driving me nuts! Henry was...wow, I don't know what to say. Sometimes he was unbelievable, sort of old fashioned.. The description of him did not sound very good looking to me and he was a little too self pitying, but after all that I still liked him. Weird.  I loved Kate's mother, she was kind and sweet and selfless, herself. It's obvious where Kate learned such good characteristics. I liked James at first but I'm not sure I like where the author is taking his character in the next books, yes it's a series, so we'll see what happens.  And Ava was exactly what I expected her to be, you'll have to read it to see what I'm talking about. ;)

Would I recommend it?
Yes, definitely. It wasn't perfect but it was fun and I'm excited to see where it goes.

  1. Hi, Jenny! So far, I'm not too impressed with Once a Witch. It's okay, but I'm not wowed by it. If you have Goodreads, you should look me up. I update there with my thoughts on what I'm reading sometimes. :)

  2. Shoot, I can't find this at the library. Is it worth the cost at amazon, do yo think?

  3. Marla, I'm on Goodreads and will look you up. That's disappointing about Once a Witch.

Dana, Yeah, if you get it cheap you won't be too sad if you don't like it. That's my theory anyways. But I liked this one even if it was obviously a first book.

  4. I couldn't find it at the library either, which seems odd. After reading this I'm pretty excited about starting it, especially knowing that it has to do with Hades and Persephone, who are two incredibly interesting personalities.

  5. Kaye, I hate when the library doesn't have a book I want. Good luck. Amazon has it for cheap.
