What To Read, What To Read?

Dear blogging buddies, I seem to be in a bit of a reading slump. I'm not really enjoying anything. This may be due to forces beyond the book I'm reading's control but I'm hoping not. I want to read a book that makes me think, that has me in a euphoric bliss. Turning page after page, unable to put it down. Alright this might be too much to ask for as I am a picky reader and can find fault with just about anything, (I know, for shame) but I have to ask.
So, that's where you come in. These are the books I'm thinking about. If you've read one and  absolutely adored it, not just "liked" it then vote for it. If you haven't heard of any but have another suggestion please let me know. I need help! I can't take another mediocre or just plain BAD book.  So here's what I'm thinking.

Firelight by Sophie Jordan
Yeah, so this probably the best choice for my mood but, oh well.

The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf
My mother was totally intrigued by this one so maybe it will drag me in.

Room by Emma Donoghue
Is it too childlike to enjoy?

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Well, Elizabeth found herself, maybe I can in her journey. ;)

Thanks for all help. And if you have a different suggestion post it in the comments.

  1. Awww I hate it when that happens! I have not read any of these books, so I won't be able to give you any advice there. Have you already read Divergent? I loved it and it gets so many amazing reviews. I hope you pick up your reading mojo soon :)

  2. I've only read the latter two and while I enjoyed ROOM it's not really a book you can love mainly due to the topics involved. But it is worth reading.

And though so many people adored EAY PRAY LOVE...I would not recommend it to a single person and I don't say that too often. The book could have been summed up in a paragraph and I had very little empathy for the author as most of the book came off like whining to me. But, that's just me.

For books I've adored I can suggest:
A GAME OF THRONES: This entire series is fabulous and although the books are long they read very quickly as GRRM is an incredibly talented storyteller.

STAY, Deb Caletti: This book deals with bad relationships and is something you can't really love kind of like ROOM, but the writing is superb and made me want to read all of her other books. Not to mention the great characters.

BETWEEN TWO ENDS, David Ward: The first book I reviewed for my blog, a children's book but an incredibly clever one. It's an adaptation of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS and this book gets all the little touches just right.

I hope you find the right book for you and I'll make sure to pop in to see what it is. :)

  3. I hear your pain. Really, I do.
These past few weeks have been rough reading weeks for me. I am in some sort of mood funk with very little patience for a story to grab me. My attention span is also less than to be desired; lengthy books are not ones I am gravitating towards right now. I have actually picked up 3 books; read 50 -100 pgs and then set them down. These are books that have been on TBR list forever; I have not given up. I will pick them up again once my funk or at least my attention span is better.

    For the books you listed:
I have ROOM waiting to be read. I am avoiding it because I think the theme may be a bit too deep for me right now; with my mood and all.

EAT,PRAY, AND LOVE was a fail with me several years ago. I liked the first country; Italy. After that, she lost me; to new-age type thoughts for me. I put it down, and have no desire to ever pick it back up again. blah.

I read the summary for FIRELIGHT, and that is the one I am voting for because it sounds like a fun, easy, quick read that has potential to draw me in, and captivate throughout the entire story. Who knows, may be I am wrong. But that is the one I voted for.

For me, here are the few books that have absorbed me into their pages these last few weeks. They are not deep books, but oh so much fun to read.

    1. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa. I plan on posting my review for that book in the next week or two. Loved it.

    2. Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini The book will be released on May 31st.

    3. The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie The jury is still out on this one as I have just started it, but I have heard great things about this book, AND I am already on page 77 and am fully absorbed into the read AND I just started the book last night around 930pm.

4.The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. LOVE this book, and no hardship at all reading it. You should give it a go, BUT it is vastly different than YA books. Suey loved it too. :)

Okay, enough from me. I wish loads of luck with choosing the book that can captivate you, and take away from this world into its.

  4. Selina, I almost put Divergent on the list but am afraid in my current mood that i would end up unfairly judging it.

Kaye, I'm going to check out Stay and Between Two Ends but whether they are next on my list I don't know yet. Thanks for your input on Room and Eat, Pray, Love. I don't think I can handle a whiny protagonist right now.

Ibeeeg, Thanks for all your suggestions. I know you and Suey are raving about The Name of the Wind and I have already bought it because of that, but I'm scared I'll find fault with it in my current mood and ruin it for myself.

How about an anti-recommendation? (And from someone who hasn't read any of these books, to boot!)

The Broke and the Bookish blog recently asked people to list the ten books they've lied about. Eat, Pray, Love made several lists, everyone who mentioned it saying that the pressure to like the book when they often couldn't stand the author was intense.

  6. Enbrethiliel, I've heard good and bad about Eat, Pray, Love, so I'll have to see. The movie was a little on the long boring side.

  7. I hate it when I get in a book slump. I just finished a couple books that I really liked (Paranormalcy & Delirium)and am not as into anything else. Maybe you could reread one of your favorites?

And I suddenly feel vindicated in my dislike for Eat, Pray, Love. I felt bad for hating on the lady, since it's sort of an autobiography. But holy cow she was whiny!

  8. Kathy, I have definitely considered rereading an old favorite. I'm guessing I probably won't be reading Eat, Pray, Love anytime soon.

  10. Sorry, I haven't read any of these...for what it's worth, most people that I know that have read Room thought it was terrific. Good luck!

  11. I don't seem to remember being interested in one of those books--refresh my memory--I'm getting so forgetful, But maybe I've already arrived.

Hey, though, I'm posting from my computer in Loa! How about that?

  12. iLuvReadingTooMuch, Thanks, everyone seems to be leaning towards Firelight so that might just be it.

TheBookGirl, I've heard great things about Room too. I'm sure it would be a good one.

Techno Grandma, Wow! using the internet in Loa! Yay! The book The Weight of Silence...Mom, it kept you up all night it was so intense.

  14. I haven't read any of them. I did read two books this week when I was unable to sleep at 3:00 AM The first Alex Rider book, Storm Breaker, I'm usually pretty book friendly...really didn't like this one. And I read Indian in the Cupboard, actually did like this.

I voted for The Weight of Silence, because I just knew it wasn't only junk food making me heavy.
