Rant Of Epic Proportions

K, I really shouldn't worry about this but I've been fuming for over a week! So, as you may know, I'm a big fan of The Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini and am ecstatic about the fourth book finally being released on the 8th. In fact, I'm re-reading the first three books despite a monstrous TBR pile because I want to be reminded of all the tiny details before reading the fourth. Anywho, the most exciting thing is Christopher Paolini is going to be coming to my local library in December!!! I'm soooo excited. So, you can imagine my irritation when I discovered that my local library and Barnes and Noble got together and decided that, unless you buy Inheritance (the fourth book) that night from Barnes and Noble you can't get the book signed...........

Are you freaking kidding me?! I bet you Barnes and Noble decided it wasn't worth their time to come to the bookish events and sell books so they told the library they wouldn't come unless they could be guaranteed a lot of sales. I don't really know what happened but it's bad enough that Borders closed and now the only freaking bookstore within a reasonable distance is this stupid Barnes and Noble. Needless to say I immediately clicked on over to Amazon and ordered Inheritance from them. I don't give a dang if I can't get it signed I will NOT be taken advantage of by that full price charging, no coupons ever, selfish, arrogant store!!!  I'm never buying a book from them again! I mean hello? I want to read the book before he comes. I don't want to wait to buy it just for Barnes and Noble selfish reasons. Sheesh!

I'm already irritated with Barnes and Noble so even if they weren't the ones behind it (and why wouldn't they be?) I'm done with them. Why should I pay full price for books and be treated by crap by their cashiers? But that's another rant for another day.

Phew! Rant over, thanks for listening.  Am I the only person who finds this outrageous? Anyone else hate B&N?

  1. Epic Rant :) I hate being manipulated like that by companies *hoping* to cash in on maximum sales.

  2. Omg! I can't believe they are doing that. That is completely selfish and stupid! They should know that a lot of people have Pre-Ordered it! They even have a Pre-Order from them for Inheritence. Why the hell would they make you buy it at full price through THEM to be able to get it signed.

It's nt worth it! You could always e-mail him and ask him for a signed bookplate! Google online and see if you can get one somewhere by Christopher.

    I'm sorry B&N are stupid. =(

  3. This bugs me too! I've never been a book signing but you should be allowed to bring whatever u want and have the person sign it!

  4. This really sucks. I'm glad I'm not going to be able to go now because that would just irritate me beyond all reason. Ugh! Now, I hate B&N even more than I did.

  5. I wanted to rant on my blog about this too! So can I still? You beat me to it!

According to the source, it's the PUBLISHER that's putting this glitch in our lives, which makes even less sense. Because, doesn't the publisher want people to buy the book the first week, no matter where? The more I think about it the madder I get too. I will be buying my copy also from Amazon.

  6. P.S. I just went back and read more about this issue. It also says he will only personalize Inheritance.... he will sign the others but not personalize. I really hope it's not him saying this and that he is being forced by his handlers. It's becoming clear he ain't no Markus Zusak! (Who, by the way, tweeted me in the middle of the night again!)

  7. Trish, I hate being manipulated by anyone so, yeah.

the Vintage Bookworm, I don't care THAT much about having a book signed I just don't like a bunch of stupid rules about it.

    Sarah, I know! WTH?

Jenni, You don't get to come? :(

Suey, You can rant. ;) I'm still irritated with B&N regardless. There's no way they didn't have something to do with this. There's no reason the publisher would have to to insist you buy it from B&N. That doesn't make sense! OMG! What did Markus say this time?!!!

  8. Uh...Since you bought the first three books for me. ahem...and, uh, got me hooked........? hint

  9. WOW! That is completely ridiculous! I'm studying library science right now and I can't believe that the librarians would okay this! Librarians are supposed to be about free and open access to all...and by saying that they you can only get it signed if you buy it from Barnes and Noble pretty much goes against everything that stands for! I'm as outraged as you are and I'm not even going to this event!! I can understand maybe having to bring some kind of reciept with you to prove that you've purchased the book (whether its from Amazon or your local bookstore), but that makes no sense at all!

  10. This is ludicrous! This is what happens when one company gets a monopoly on the market. It's hard to not start blaming everyone involved because they certainly will be. B&N will say it's the publisher and the publisher will say it's B&N of the author. But I highly doubt it's the publisher. The whole point of book signings is for publicity so pulling a stunt like this is really bad for a publisher. Unless they're counting on fans being too enamored that they will overlook it. That might work in other industries but readers aren't stupid. I'm all for boycotting B&N! Let me know if you want to start a campaign Jenny. I'm the best at holding a grudge :)

  11. Cowboy mom, *rolls eyes* alright, dearest sister, I'll see about getting it for you but you have to get me a Christmas tree in return. ;)

Natalie, I know! I'm so freaking livid about this. I guess the library is blaming it on the publisher but there's absolutely no reason the publishers would do that. There's no reason they'd do that.

Lan, :) Thanks for having my back. You're right, the library is blaming it on the publisher but that just doesn't make sense. Oh well, B&N was on my hate list, anyways.

  12. It's actually not barnes and nobles choice. It's the publisher that decides you have to buy something that night. When Cassandra Clare and Holly Black came to my city, they made people buy their books that night to get anything signed. Everyone was made because people came with bags full of their books already.

  13. Must Love Books, B&N was already on my hate list so I'm done with them all the same. I still don't understand why the publisher would make this rule. Don't they want the book to sell the first week it comes out?

  14. I'm pretty sure it's the publisher, because in order to get my copy signed at the visit here in AZ, I had to order it through the indie bookstore. Mind you, I can pick the book up any time after it comes out, but still it was more than twice what I would have payed on Amazon. Annoying, but probably not just B&N. (not that I'm a fan of them either, I sure miss Borders!)

  15. Certain booksellers sales count toward an author appearing on the NYT Bestseller's list, so I have a niggling feeling that might have something to do with it, too.

For the Maggie Stiefvater signing I was going to go to they were selling books, too, I'm not sure through where, but it's always been her rule that she will sign any and all of the books by her that you bring IF you purchase one book at the host venue, which, for me, makes sense.

That doesn't seem to be the case here as some books are being personalised, some aren't - all depending on where you bought it. That's a tad unfair.

  16. Melissa, I think the whole thing is just stupid. If I wasn't such a big fan of the series I wouldn't go! I miss Borders too.

Kaye, I just don't get any of it! Oh well, I'm not that obsessed with getting books signed so...

  17. Nope, I don't get to come. My yearly friend Christmas party is taking place on that night. If I were already a huge Paolini fan, I'd ditch the party and come. But, since I haven't read his books yet and now this EVIL stipulation, I'm just going to go to the party.

Courtney did offer to have Inheritance signed for me, though. But, $28 for a book that I haven't even read is just outrageous! I only remember spending that much on Harry Potter and I always pre-ordered it so I didn't have to pay full price! What are they thinking?!

  18. Jenni, Yeah, if I hadn't read the books yet and had a party, I wouldn't bother either, especially because of the crap they're pulling.
