Synopsis
I'm going to do something a little different. I HATE book trailers. I could tell you why but it would take too long. However, the book trailer to this book is so freaking awesome I thought I'd use it for the synopsis. Enjoy!

What it has going for it
I've been so excited for this one and when the awesome Emily let me borrow her ARC I was ecstatic!  I enjoyed Dan Wells' John Cleaver series and I love his writing so you can imagine how high those hopes were.  Because of those high hopes I was also afraid I might be disappointed. Well, I needn't have bothered. I LOVED it!  It was action packed and had me turning pages as fast as I could and holding my breath. I had to keep making myself slow down and concentrate so I wouldn't miss anything. There were lots of twists, some that took me totally by surprise and others I saw coming but not till the perfect moment, like right before the characters.  I love that! Oh, and I totally fell in love with Samm and I can't wait for more of him.

What's lacking
Sigh! I could be wrong, and I REALLY hope I am, but I don't think very many people are going to like this one. See, most people like character driven novels over plot driven ones. Not me, though. I mean, It's important that I like at least one character but the plot is much more important to me. I love when an author can come up with an amazing story that astounds and entertains me and doesn't waste precious time talking about a character's "feelings". Not that this one doesn't have amazing characters (did you hear me mention my new found love for Samm?) but there's hardly any romance or character drama. At least in  my opinion there wasn't. There's also a lot of talk about science that I found fascinating but I can see how it might bore other people.

Yea or Nay?
Of course I still hope you give it a try, but if you're expecting another romance with a meager plot you might be disappointed.

  1. So the stuff I was iffy about, you loved? :) But let's just say right now, I love Samm too! Yep, but did you want to get into his head more? I hope that's to come next book. I hope. So glad you liked it... loved it. We have to talk about twists now. Ah, so much on our to talk about list!

  3. I prefer plot-driven over character-driven novels, so I just added this one to my wish list. Thank you! LOVE that trailer and I usually hate them, too.

    1. Wow, no one likes plot driven novels...at least, I thought they didn't. I'm glad I'm not alone. Isn't the trailer awesome?!

  4. I'm a character girl. But, I felt like I had what I wanted from Kira and Samm. Would I have liked more character development from some of the other characters whose names I can't remember? For sure. But, second to character, I love world-building, which I felt like oozed out of the pages. I'm glad that you liked it!

  7. I don't mind either. Plot driven novels and character driven novels are both awesome. I love books where the plot brings out the characters best traits. Does that make sense? I can already tell I'm going to love this one. It's being ordered for my library and I am the first in line. Woohoo. It reminds me a lot of the book I'm writing actually...

    1. Makes perfect sense. I really think you'd like this one. There's no stupid insta love or wimpy girls.

  8. This sounds intriguing. I'm pretty sure I read the synopsis and passed on it, but I might have to put it into the maybe file. That book trailer was pretty cool though. :)

  9. Oh, I don't want another romance novel disguised as a sci-fi/dystopia, that's for sure. While I prefer character driven stories, I don't like them when they lack any plot development. After all, how can the characters develop/grow when they're not doing anything?

I really want to read this one so bad, and your review is awesome. I only wish I had less books to read already. Nevertheless, I shall endeavor to read it!

    1. I think if you just go into it with the understanding that there's a lot of story going on you'll like it just fine.

  12. I like both plot driven and character driven depending on my mood. Is it too much to ask for both? I've heard some really good things about this book so I'm excited to read it.

And you're right about the trailer - I think book trailers are lame, but that one was cool!

    1. Isn't that trailer awesome? I don't know why books can't have both but it sure seems like they can't.

  13. Hmm, I'm not so sure about this one. The heavy science feel of the trailer kind of put me off a bit. But I'm glad you enjoyed it so much :)

  14. Sounds intriguing! I've actually stopped reading books that were heavy on character development but had zero plot, so guess I prefer plot-driven stories! :)
