Synopsis
Lilly's life is complicated. Going to high school in the human world when you've grown up as a mermaid is complicated. Being a princess is complicated. Having to find true love by your 18th birthday is complicated. Lilly definitely doesn't need the next door neighbor boy, Quince making things worse but why should anything be less complicated in her life?
What it has going for it
I don't remember who was talking about this but someone was saying they'd like, just once, for there to be a mermaid book where we get to actually see a world underwater. I remember thinking about all the mermaid books I've read and thinking, yeah! Where are all those books? Well, look no further. This one actually has an underwater world...and the half the book takes place there! Shocking, I know. I'm not sure how believable I found that world but I was happy it existed and we actually got to see it. Oh, and I really love the cover of this one!
What's lacking
So, the whole time I was reading this one I kept thinking, really? That's it? There really isn't much of a plot here. I find that rather sad. I like a touch more substance to my stories but, hey. Then came the epilogue. WTH?! Seriously? What was that? We just finished this weak plotted book with no real conflict and suddenly the evil cousin steps up and turns the whole thing into a bad daytime soap? Ugh! No thanks. I shan't be reading the rest of the series.
Favorite moment
Despite the weak plot, I did find Quince rather dreamy...before he got too sweet. I loved his snarkiness.

If you want weak plot, sure.
Lol. I know, that epilogue was definitely a WHAT?! moment. I did like Quince a lot too. I never ended up continuing this series, although I might someday. I suppose it doesn't appeal as much as other series.

DeleteBummer that this one turned out to be a disappointment, as I love the idea of exploring the undersea world! Does have a great cover though! Hope your next read is better. :)

DeleteI can't believe the hero's name is Quince! That it so tragic it's almost cool. I haven't read many mermaid books but I do agree from the reviews I've read that a lot of them seem to happen on dry land. At least you finished it!
ReplyDeleteI know, right? One would assume that books about mermaids would be underwater but they so rarely are. At least this one had that going for it.
DeleteMermaid books just don't work for me usually... which is weird because I spent a lot of time as a kid wishing I was a mermaid. The only one I've really liked is Fathomless, and I'm not sure that truly counts as a mermaid book. I'll probably skip this book.

DeleteI read a book once that took place underwater but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. It didn't involve mermaids though.

DeleteI have yet to try a mermaid book, and if I ever do this probably won't be the one. I'm not a fan of week plots or crazy epilogues that make no sense. Hopefully your next read is a lot better!

DeleteLook at that - another book we agree on. We're on a roll! I thought this one was fun, but lacked substance, character development, plot development, etc. I'm not planning to continue the series either.

DeleteAhh, I am guilty! I was the one complaining about mermaid books all taking place on land. :) So nice to hear there's one out there that takes readers under water! The ho-hum plot bums me out, though. I probably won't check this one out.

DeleteI had never thought about it, but now that you mention it, you're right. In books/movies with mermaids we don't usually see an underwater world.
