Best And Worst Of 2012

It's that time again! I know you all are listing the best books you read this year and I wanted to join you. But I can't resist throwing in the WORST books too. So here you go!

BEST!

This retelling was spectacular! If you haven't read it, you must!

Oh. My. Awsomeness! Please don't tell me this one just isn't your type. You HAVE to read this one. It will mess with your mind...in a good way. ;)

Beautiful! Romantic! Heat warming! Touching! (do you feel like you're reading one of "those" reviews yet?) Seriously, though. A must read. ;)

The greatest unknown, unheard of book ever! So romantic and sweet!

I LOVE this series. I loved how it ended...well, I want more actually but I'm OK with the ending.
Oh, Cassel! Sigh!

Like you didn't know this book would be on here. ;) Once again I plead with all urban fantasy lovers to read this series. Please!

In a world of overused plot line and overdone love triangles comes something refreshingly unique!

FINALLY more Odd to enjoy! And I did, I did!

This was the only book this year I just could NOT put down! I adored it! I want more! You hear me, Camille, I want more!

So startlingly real! I love this woman's books! They make you laugh and cry and fall in love...sigh!

Worst!
(And the real reason you're reading this post)

LA LA LA, LA LA LA (That's the Smurf song, btw) The entire book fit that theme song. Can you say all over the place?!

Oh, John, my boy. Quit trying to discover yourself by writing about yourself. It's SO ANNOYING!

It sounded good, it was urban fantasy (my favorite genre) but oh how scattered and boring. Sigh!

A book about bunnies?! I expected magic or superpowers but no. Just bunnies doing bunny things. And lest you think there's some symbolism there, NO! Don't you dare try to make this book better in your mind. The author says there was no symbolism.

The author could have TRIED to disguise the fact that she ripped off She's The Man a tinsy bit better. Just sayin'.

Just thinking about this series makes my eye twitch and my hands involunteeringly pull at my hair. Stupid, stupid, stupid characters!

Just sad and dark and depressing. Maybe that's Neverland to some people but not me!

"Oh, no she din't!"  Oh, yes I did! What a pretentiously written book.

If you're going to make a story THAT boring the least you could have done was make it surprising. But, no. Predictable, thy name is Ender's Game.

Feminist? Anti-feminist? We'll never know, we're still trying to figure out what the heck happened!

  1. Cinder was a DNF for me :( The first chapter was great but then it kinda went downhill from there. Thankfully I haven't read any books on your worst books list. I was thinking of possibly reading The Handmaiden's Tale but I don't think I will anymore :(

    1. See? We're all different. Cause I adored Cinder. We're enough alike that you could probably avoid the books on my worst list and be just fine.

  2. Oh man, I'm sad to see some of the books listed as "worst". I really liked Looking for Alaska, and read it first since it was his first book. BUT you're totally right about him writing about himself. I swear, all his characters are the same as the ones in Alaska, and all the male protagonists have HIS voice. You can watch his videos on YouTube and basically that's his books. So boring.

I haven't read Tiger Lily yet, but I kind of want to. I mean I have this picture in my head of what Peter Pan is supposed to be. I don't mind fairy tale retellings, but there is something so innocent about Peter Pan that I really don't want it to be tampered with. Seeing it pop up on your worst list is a little distressing.

I definitely agree with you about Cinder though! I had my hope up SO high about Cinder, and it delivered! That hardly ever happens. I was so scared because it just sounded too good to be true and had so much hype and press surrounding it. But in the end I'm so happy I read it.

    1. Oh my gosh! I'm totally quoting you at my next books club! No one there believes that John Green is so writing about himself! Thank you!

You are in for quite the shock with Tiger Lily. Peter Pan was all wrong.

Don't you love when a book lives up to it's hype?

  3. Cinder is on my list of must-read-in-2013 books, AND starting the Curse Workers series. So much greatness I hear about them both. ^_^ And I love the way you describe the Worst of 2012! You totally make my day with your straightforwardness. :)

    1. Jessica, you've got to read the Curse Workers series! You just have to.

  4. Oh, Jenny, your pithy summaries crack me up, even when I don't agree with them! In this case, I've only read two on your list, so I have nothing to disagree with! Okay, I take that back, I've really only read one and started another. I just this weekend read Tiger Lily, and blogged about it. I started Cinder, but it wasn't doing anything for me at the time, so I gave up. But it's one I'll probably revisit in the future. I have The Scorpio Races on my Nook, but haven't read it yet.
The only book of John Green's I've read is The Fault of Our Stars which I really liked. I've read a lot of people's negativity concerning him and am not sure what it's about. Am I missing something? (I've never watched his videos.)

    1. It makes me happy when people laugh at my rude remarks. I mean them to be funny. I didn't know there were negative things being said about John Green. All I ever hear is his undeserved praise.

  5. I've only read about 4 of these, but I agree with you on all of them (probably a first!). I loved CINDER and THE HOLLOW CITY and hated ENDER'S GAME. I'll have to try some of the other books on your list and see what I think!

What great wrap ups! The negative reviews are so much more entertaining than the positive ones. You're right that they're the real reason for this post--from both your point of view and ours. ;-)

    1. Yeah, I love the negative ones. I have such fun bashing stuff.

  9. Agree with you that Cinder was awesome, but disappointed that you didn't like The Handmaid's Tale. Even when I disagree with you though, you still make me laugh! Happy New Year! :)

  10. I love your yearly best & worst list. :) Thankfully I was only interested in one book on your worst list, so I don't think I'll read it. I really need to get to the Curse Workers books next year.

  11. Haha! Great list! One of my goals for 2013 will have to be reading The Hollow City and the Minority Council. Both have been on my to-read list for too long now!

    1. Oh I really hope you read The Hollow City. It's so awesome!

  12. I love to see which books fall on what side of this list! A lot of my favorites of the year made it on your best list: THE HOLLOW CITY, ONCE WAS LOST, and PRECIOUS BANE. I also really enjoyed SULAN (thanks for that by the way).

And, of course, I disagree just a tinsy bit on your worst list. Especially on the John Green, but we've discussed that at length. :)

    1. Yeah, we've discussed but one day I'll get you to agree with me. ;-)

  13. Wait a minute, how the hell did I miss a Dan Wells book???!!! I forgive myself only a little because it's not a John Wayne Cleaver book, but still! I am so sad and mad, but I will read it in 2013!! This I swear by the stars!

Sorry, I've been saying this about everything since watching Les Miz...

    1. Oh you'll love The Hollow City. It's even better than the John Wayne Cleaver books.

  14. So I read Odd Thomas... and since you are an Odd lover like Kate and Courtney I am also blaming you for that ending. Seriously, I was VERY UPSET!!!!!!! I was cursing everyone who recommended that book to me. I loved the book though, so that saves you from further cursing.

  15. So many of your best of, I was like YES! And your worst... well, I still want to read Babe in Boyland and now I want to read it more. I LOOOVE she's the man and don't mind a book ripping it off. :)

    1. Yeah, if just rather stick to the movie. If you give me your address I'll happily send you Babe in Boyland.

  16. Hey, thanks for the Sulan shout out! And I am LOL at your comments on Watership Down -- it's the real reason I've never read it! Bunnies just aren't all that interesting!
