Review:Alice In Wonderland

Title Alice in Wonderland
By Lewis Carroll
Genre Classic
Pages 119

First Sentence Alice was getting very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and having nothing do.

Synopsis
Chasing a white rabbit wearing a waistcoat down a rabbit hole is just the beginning of a wild adventure for Alice.

What it has going for it
Um, it's a classic? The writing isn't terrible. The Chershire Cat. That's about all I can think of.

What's Lacking
Seriously...What was Carroll thinking? I guess one might see a touch of symbolism or at least just enjoy the wild imagination of a little girl. Maybe back in the day kids adored this one. It's not a classic with that many re-tellings and movies based off it for nothing but wow. I just thought it was one bad fever dream that, when it wasn't boring the pants off me, was kinda sorta scaring me. I only read it because I wanted the original before I started on the re-telling, Splintered. Let's hope it's better than this!

Favorite moment
I've always been fond of the Cheshire Cat.

Yea or Nay?
Honestly, I can't see any reason why you'd need to read this one. Just skip it.

  2. So, I'm half way through Splintered and last night all I could do was dream about it and Alice and Wonderland . . .and the Jabberwocky poem was on repeat in my head all night long! LOL! It's good so far actually and I do think the reading of this original will make you appreciate Splintered more. You'll have to tell me! Anyway, it just had one of the swoony-ist kiss scenes I've ever read, so there's that! Let me know if you agree when you get there!

  3. Hmm I think I might stick to the cartoon because at least that had pretty pictures. This is why I'm often afraid to read classic because I usually don't end up liking things with lots of symbolism and words I don't understand!

  4. Lol. It's funny--I hadn't seen the Disney movie in years and watched it a year or so ago and thought it was crazypants. I can't imagine how the book is. I hope you enjoy Splintered! I've heard great things about it, and I love retellings. :)

  5. If I wasn't so awful at doing the classic double challenge, you could totally do this book and Splintered for it! Makes me want to read it just to see the crazy :)

  6. Never a big fan of Alice to begin with, so good to know I didn't miss anything by not reading the book! I do still want to read Splintered though, so will keep an eye out for your review.

Writing this a second time because my comment vanished and hoping that I don't double post on you . . .

If I hadn't already read Alice in Wonderland, I still would, because it's a classic that everyone still references, whether or not we remember it accurately. Yet when I did read it, I had pretty much the same reaction that you did! What was that all about???

I guess we're so far removed from Victorian culture that we can't even get their sense of humour. Perhaps in 150 years, nobody will understand what the heck we all saw in Phineas and Ferb! =P
