Friday Flicks: A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time
Rating

What It's About
(Jenny style) A father and mother scientist have this idea that one can travel through the time and space with just your mind. People laugh at them. Then the father goes missing and hasn't been seen for four years and his daughter, Meg, grows increasingly angsty while her younger brother, Charles Wallace,  who probably can't even remember their father acts a thousand years older than he really is. Then this neighbor kid, Calvin, shows up and these crazy ladies with way too much makeup show up too and bring them into another world to find Meg's father. And of course, because OF COURSE, Oprah Winfrey plays The Universe. *eye roll*

I'm almost 99% sure that if I'd taken LSD or at least gotten really drunk before watching this one I would have loved it...that, or ended up under the theater chair on the sticky ground rocking back and forth humming Ingrid Michaleson's Be OK.

Either way it would have been better than watching this one stone cold sober and wondering what in the hell I was watching.

Before you lash out at me I feel like I should explain. My mom and sister tried for most of my childhood to get me to read the books this movie was based on and I tried but I could NOT get into it. After watching the movie I remembered why I couldn't get into the books. This story doesn't even make sense. At least not in THIS movie. You can't just take a bunch of people, plaster twenty pounds of makeup, glitter and sequins on them throw in a bunch of CGI and pretend it's a deep and entertaining story. It's not.

I rolled my eyes so many times in the movie I got a headache. I had to fiercely apologize to my husband for making him go see it too. But, hey, at least there was popcorn.

Let's Talk
Oprah as The Universe? Really?

Recommendation
Honestly, just skip it, if you must see it, wait till it's free. Don't spend a dime of your hard earned money.

  1. LOL! Your reviews crack me up. I have no intention of seeing this dumpster fire that pretty much no one liked, expect all the people who made it. You know a film is bad when that is the extent of the fan base.

  2. Ha ha ha! I love how honest you are. I don't think you're going to like the book because the move and the book are pretty similar.

  3. Bwahahaha! It really is a weird book. I haven't seen the movie and I'm not planning to. Sorry you wasted your time and money (although I'm glad you did because this review made me laugh).

    1. Thanks. At least me seeing it was good for something.

  4. Okay, I love this book, which is exactly why I DON'T want to see this movie. Because the previews look NOTHING like the book I read and loved as a kid. Trust Hollywood to try and "improve" a classic. And I really can't take Oprah in all her grandiosity. :(

    1. My sister loved the book too. I might still try it but the movie was just awful.

  5. I love Ingrid Michaleson's Be OK! I have that CD in my car.

I'm so sorry you didn't like this! At least you didn't end up on the sticky floor... silver linings, right?

I know this movie has gotten a lot of hype, but I'd never heard of the book until I saw a preview for this. *cringes* I know... people look at me like I'm crazy when I said that. So, not having read the book, the movie looks wild. I don't know how else to describe it. A lot of familiar faces? It wasn't something I was drooling to see.

  6. Ugh, I tried to read this like 3 times as a kid and I just couldn't do it. No desire to see the movie. Thanks for taking one for the team here and letting us know that it's not magically better than the book. ;)

I hope your next Friday Flick is way better!

  9. My kids wouldn't have anything to do with the book, either, but they loved the movie. I wanted the movie to be something entirely different than it was (having loved completely different aspects of the book than what they showed in the movie), but part of me was happy spending time in a childhood world that was important to me. I was planning to take my mom (since she taught the book back in the day), and I'm sooo glad I took my kids instead. They were definitely the target audience and not those of us who grew up reading it.

  10. I could never get into this as a kid either- honestly I thought it was weird. And I love scifi/ fantasy! But not this one. So yeah I won't be seeing it. And Oprah as the Universe? Next.

  11. I'm not really interested in seeing this. Not just because of Oprah, but I've never seen a adaptation that did the book justice. The book is weird.
