Top Ten Tuesday

Today  The Broke and the Bookish asks the question: who are your top ten minor characters?

1 Colonel Fitzwilliam from Pride and Prejudice
(long breathy sigh!) I love this character. He's so funny and amiable and, oh, so observant. He sees Elizabeth for who she is and sees Darcy for who he is long before Darcy and Elizabeth see each other.

2 Death from The Book Thief
Well, I don't know if I'd call him a minor character but even though it's narrated by him I think we often over look him. Death is exactly how I imagined him, well, if death were a person. He's aloof and reserved and maybe even slightly scared of us, yet so warm and compassionate and careful. (and yes, Death is male in my minds eye)

3 Xander from Matched
Yeah, he starts out as a main character but after Cassia becomes obsessed with the annoyance that it Ky, Xander sort of falls to to minor character which is a shame because I think he's quite sweet. He's loyal and easy going and is so much deeper and wise to what's going on than Cassia realizes.

4 Mr Palmer from Sense and Sensibility
Yeah, I know, weird! But this is one of those character I always thought was a good, kind man who unfortunately married the wrong woman and as a result become rather unlikable. But I still think he's a good man somewhere deep down and I like him. (and, yes, I'm basing my opinion more on the movie than the book though I still believe it true in either)

5 Ben from The Mercy Thompson series
Alright, he can be a jerk sometimes but as the series progresses and we learn about his past is it any wonder?  Oh, how I wish Mercedes would get rid of yawn fest Adam and Run off with Ben, and not even romantically.

6 Zara's mom from Need
She's selfless and kind and, oh, how I wanted to read about her story!

7 Hareton from Wuthering Heights
The only redeeming person in this book! He's shy and quiet and, yeah, he has a nasty temper but wouldn't you if Heathcliff raised you?!

8  Charles Musgrove from Persuasion
He puts up with his annoying wife Mary and had the good sense to want to marry Anne fist. Need I say more?

9 Elivs from the Odd Thomas books
Yes, you heard me THE Elvis. He doesn't talk he doesn't sing and he's been dead for a long time, but he's so  protective  and concerned  for Odd that you just have to love the guy.

10 The Voice in Max's head from The Maximum Ride series
I still don't know what it is but this voice, though not very fleshed out, is always protecting Max and, yes, sometimes annoying the crap out of her.

What minor characters are on your list?

  1. I take it you don't like Ky? :) I think Xander is a great character too and he is very knowledgeable of what's going on around him. I was surprised when I found out that the red pill didn't work on him. It will be interesting to see how this story develops.

  2. Jenni Elyse, Yuck! I hate Ky. I'm very interested to see what happens too. Even though I know she'll end up with the moron!

  3. I always feel bad not commenting but some of your posts leave me going...Huh!

I would have to read a couple more books to come up with enough minor characters to do this post. Unless...do Dr. Seuss books count?

Then it's Goat from Green Eggs and Ham. He is one amazing Goat and realizes that, even though Sam I Am is a whiny brat most of the story, in the end Sam and Green Eggs and Ham are ultimately meant for each other. I cry each time I read it when I think of the anguish he feels as he refrains from his goatish urges so that, in the end Sam can be with his true love. Yes,I see him as a boy goat.

  6. Boy Mom, Yes, Dr Seuss books count and I was going to go with the Vug under the rug because I think he's horribly misunderstood, shy and beautiful, once you get to know him. (and yes, it's a boy);)

Suey, Glad you agree on 9. Now I know you want to read these books. ;)

Dana, I was a little worried people would think I was crazy putting Death on my list but oh well.

  7. Jenny, I LOVE this quote: "the annoyance that is Ky." I heartily concur. At first I was taken in by him, but then I was like, "Hey, I like Xander better." Nice list, overall.

  8. OMG Totally agree with No. 10!! The Voice is kinda a minor character, though it plays a huge role in the story :) Nice List, and thanks for dropping by my blog! I'm a new follower! :D

  9. Jessica, LOL, yes, Xander is much better than Ky, that's why she'll probably choose Ky. Grrr!

iluvreadingtoomuch, I felt kind of silly putting the Voice on my list so I'm glad you understand. Thanks for stopping by.

  10. Actually when I said 9 I meant 8! BUT, that doesn't mean I don't want to try Odd Thomas at some point!

  11. Zara's mom is such a good choice. Her backstory is so rich! I hope Carrie Jones releases a novella or something about her.

  12. Suey, Oh well. I'll never stop pushing the Odd Thomas books. ;)

Bekka, Me too! Someone should suggest it to her...I'm too chicken.

Oh, I love Hareton, too! But my own favourite minor character from Wuthering Heights is Mr. Lockwood. =)

And I had to grin when I saw you had included the voice in Max's head. Not many people would think of it as a separate character! LOL! ;-)
