Top Ten Tuesday

Today  The Broke and the Bookish asks the question: What are your top ten underrated books (books you can't believe aren't more popular?

Oooo! I'm going to have fun with this one!

1 The Matthew Swift series. (which is actually called The Urban Magic series) by Kate Griffin
Seriously, people, how much do I have to talk this series up before you read it?!

2 The Chronicles of Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody
This is one of the best epic fantasy\dystopian series I've ever read! If you haven't heard of them or read them you're missing out.

3 Getting the Girl by Markus Zusak
For those of you who've read The Book Thief or my favorite, I Am The Messenger, might I suggest this one. It makes me cry like a baby every single time I read it.

4 The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
I thought this one was more well know but as I'm learning, it's not quite as well known as I thought. What are you waiting for? Go read this one!

5 Winter of Fire by Sherryl Jordan
Most people think the Harry Potter books were my first fantasy books but no, my first fantasy was this little gem. If you like fantasies and haven't had the pleasure of reading this one...get to it! Plus it's a stand-alone book.

6 Avalon High by Meg Cabot
This one might actually be well known but it is, by far, my favorite Cabot ever! I LOVED it.

7 The Master of Blacktower by Barbara Michaels
This was a favorite as a teenager. Its a romantic mystery and was just that, incredibly romantic and swoon inducing.

8 Threshold by Sara Douglass
Another stand-alone fantasy that's totally worth the read.

9 Good Grief by Lolly Winston
A laugh out loud book that will always stick in my mind.

10 The Magnificent Masquerade by Elizabeth Mansfield
I know what you're thinking, but I read a lot, A LOT, of regency romances in my time and this was my favorite. Unlike the others that jumbled in my brain and faded away this one will forever stand out as the funniest and most romantic ever!

Wow, as I was thinking about this one and looking through my books, I realized how many books I own that might be considered obscure that I haven't read yet. Good grief! I should have a obscure book themed month of reading. I hope that rather than this just being a silly meme we'll actually come away with a few new book recommendations from friends. Hint, hint. ;)

  1. Wow, we have such similar tastes with these obscure books its kind of scary! I just bought the first Obernewtyn book yesterday! The Thirteenth Tale has been on my TBR list ever since I heard about it and Winter of Fire! OMG! I loved this one! In fact I read it when I was in grade school for the summer reading program and I couldn't remember the name of it but I could describe it to a tee and finally was able to track it down this last year, I re-read it and loved it just as much again (though I kind of wish it wasn't a stand alone - I want more!).

One series I would suggest would be the Rhiannon's Ride series by Kate Forsyth

  2. Ang, Isn't Winter Of Fire Amazing! I remember reading it in junior high and I loved it. When I finally bought it I read it again. I wish there was more too, but some people mike like the idea of it being a stand-alone books after all the series and trilogies these days. I hope you like the Obernewtyn books. I do have to warn you the first is the slowest and feels a little...simple? So just stick with it.

  3. Yay! I've read one book on your list! I feel like I've accomplished something. :) I've read The Thirteenth Tale and I really enjoyed it. It was so strange and captivating. I'll have to look into your other books.

  4. Jenni, LOL, I haven't looked at other people's lists today but I'm sure I'll feel the same as you as soon as I do.

  5. Thanks for the forewarning Jenny. I will definitely stick with it (though I probably should have bought the other books in the series). I can understand the stand alone books, it doesn't seem like there are many out there anymore. I am involved in so many different series it gets hard to keep up. Some series have over 20 books in them, it would be nice to read a single novel and have a conclussion without having to wait a year or more.

  6. I'm also wondering why they haven't made a movie out of Thirteenth Tale yet?! It was indeed a very good book.

  10. Ang, Oh good, you stopped by again. I was going to comment on yours about the Obernewtyn books. I feel like I have to warn people because a lot of people gave up after the first and they are totally missing out!

    Sash and Em, She's pretty great. I haven't read a book by her I haven't liked...yet.

Trish, I'm glad you've read it...I hadn't even thought of it as a movie but that would be pretty cool!

Anne, Older books or not everything he writes is just amazing.

BookGatherer, Thanks for stopping by. Everything by Zusak is great in my opinion!

Chelleyreads, Thanks for stopping by. It's really an amazing book, I've yet to meet anyone who wasn't blown away.

  13. I couldn't come up with a good list today, so I skipped it this week! Sad, huh. Everything I thought of I thought, but that's not obscure! Everyone knows about it! You've done a great job on your list though. Good going! Did you know that Underdogs is already at Amazon? Yeah, I never got my arc. Whatever.

  14. LBC, It's amazing! You should check it out.

Jordyn, I love it. Plus it's super short it wouldn't take you long.

Suey, I thought it was going to be easy but once I actually started it was harder than I thought. I wonder why you didn't get your arc. I'll have to order Underdog.
