Rating ⭐️⭐️

Synopsis
Tessa and Valerie live very different lives. Tessa is a stay at home mom married to a handsome surgeon. Her day's are filled with bustling kids off to school, cleaning the house and keeping up with the other mom's in the neighborhood. Valerie is a single mother who's worked for everything she's got. Raising her son and trying not to be so closed off to the world are her biggest priorities. When a horrible accident brings these two woman together, their lives will never be the same.

First Sentence
When ever I hear of someone else's tragedy, I do not dwell on the accident or diagnosis, or even the initial shock waves or aftermath of grief.

  • With all the stress and craziness going on in my life right now, I needed another of Giffin's addicting, distracting stories. Giffin delivered again. She has a way of writing that just sucks you right in.
  • As unputdownable as this book was it had a much heavier subject matter that was just downright painful to read.
  • It brings up a really great question, though, amidst all it's heaviness and while I was not as in love with this one, I will say it worked as a great distraction at the end of the day.
  • The more of Giffin's books I read, the more I hesitate to label her books as Chick Lit. They all have some serious subject matter. This one in particular, as I mentioned.
  • So...yeah, it was a great distraction and great to have a book I couldn't wait to get back to but it was a hard, hard book to read.
Should you read it?
I'd definitely recommend Giffin's books but maybe don't start with this on

  1. So, I find it interesting that you only gave this 2 stars. Is this because of the subject matter? I think even if it was hard to read if I enjoyed it (maybe enjoy isn't the right word), I'd give it higher stars.

    1. I base my ratings on Goodreads. Even if it's a flawed system. So to me this one was just OK.

  2. Love the One You're With sounds like an lighter/happier read...at least from your two reviews. I might start with that one. :)

    1. Yeah, their both a little heavy but this one was much more so.

  3. This one doesn't sound light and fluffy at all :( At least it was still a good distraction for you. Good to know that Giffin's books have some substance to them as I'd always thought of her as a fluff writer. I really need to try her out at some point.

    1. Yeah, I would have preferred light and fluffy but as long as it was distracting.

  4. This always happens to you! You go to read a book thinking it's going to be fun and then it turns into something else entirely. Glad it provoked some thought even if it wasn't the fluff you were looking for.

    1. Yeah, it's cause I always have this image in my head of what a book is going to be about. I really need to stop doing that.

  5. Most books end up being so superficial. I'm surprised a book like this has depth and darkness. I'm not saying I want to read it, but it gets tiresome reading only fluff all the time in a certain genre. 'Course when you want to read to it and can't, that can be frustrating, too.

  6. What was hard about this book? What book from this author would you suggest starting with?

    1. It's about infidelity which was just hard to read about. I would recommend Something Borrowed or Something Blue or even Love the One You're With.

  7. I read a couple of Giffin's books way back in the 90s, during my chick lit phase. I agree; her books aren't fluff. In fact, I would love it if the lighter books classified as chick lit were relabeled "romantic comedy" and the heavier ones just mixed in with general fiction. I've always thought separating books into chick lit or women's fiction likely limits their audience and does a disservice to the author. That's a guess, though; I don't know if there are any stats to prove whether it's a good or bad thing labeling the way they do.

    1. I know. I don't know if the authors mind being put in the Chick Lit category or not. Her books, while romantic, should just be labeled fiction.

  8. After reading and loving Something Borrowed and Something Blue, it was kind of a shock to read some of her other novels- this and Baby Proof. I have to admit that I like her earlier books more, but I'm still open to her as an author (sometimes heavier, deeper themes are what I'm in the mood for).

    1. So...Baby Proof is heavy too? Maybe I'll skip that one. I like depth but I kind of like her lighter books better.
