Best & Worst Of 2016
It's that time of year again! OK, I've been really behind on my 2016 wrap up posts. Bear with me. I love doing a top ten worst books I read in any given year, but this year I thought I'd do top 5 best books and top 5 worst. Mostly because I didn't read a ton of books in 2016 so the pickings are slim. However, I did read some great books this year and some not so great books. So here you go.
My Top 5 Best Books of 2016
(in no particular order)
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
I love the books by Moriarty that I've read and this one is my favorite so far.
Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira
I'm afraid some people will wonder what on earth I saw in this one but it just spoke to my soul. Right book at the right time, I guess.
The Sculptor by Scott McCloud
Who knew a GN would make it to my top 5 best books? Not me. This one totally blew me away.
Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella
Very cute story that dealt with some serious issues. Love these types of books.
Roomies by Sara Zarr and Altebrando
Honestly, I'll give just about anything Sara Zarr writes 5 stars.
My Top 5 Worst Books of 2016
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
Take the stupidest story ever...and then read it on repeat and you'll get this book. Never again!
Dead Ringer by Jessie Rosen
I can't believe someone thought this book was good enough to publish...even the author. Horrible!
The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
While you can't really bash someone for writing a book about how they grieved the loss of a loved one, it sure is tempting with this one.
Burning Glass by Kathryn Purdie
For a book about an Empath I don't think she had much empathy.
(sorry Jenni)
Black-Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin
Sometimes, when you're really looking forward to a book and it disappoints you this much it doesn't matter that it wasn't THAT bad, you hate it anyway.
And there you have it. My top 5 worst and best books of 2016. Are we in agreement on any of these? Or total disagreement?
I've only read one of these books. I loved WHAT ALICE FORGOT as well. Moriarty is one of my favorite authors, but her newest book was one of the most disappointing things I read in 2016. I hope she gets her mojo back -- and SOON!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I keep hearing that her newest one isn't great. I guess she was due a crappy one after so many good ones.
DeleteI didn't get through The Husbands Secret so I haven't tried another by Moriarty. Life After Life was a book club choice which I chose NOT to read, lol, glad I didn't. I also took Black Eyed Susans off my TBR list, to many similar reviews.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read The Husband's Secret yet. I hear that ones tough. You either love it or hate it. You should try her others. WAF is really good. Life After Life was a book club book for me too. I wish I'd skipped it.
DeleteI've only read Life After Life...well, I read half of it before quitting out of boredom and dislike. So, I'd agree with you on that one! :)
ReplyDeleteRight? At least you were smart enough to give up on it.
DeleteI've read a lot of mixed reviews for Burning Glass - I did originally want to read it, but they've really put me off. Glad you enjoyed Finding Audrey! That's on my TBR, looking forward to getting to it!
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it when you read it. Burning Glass was alright, just not for me.
DeleteHa ha ha! I love that you put Sorry Jenni by Burning Glass. It's okay. To each their own. I'm glad we at least agree on Life After Life. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I just know it was a favorite for you so I felt bad.
DeleteThe Sculptor is new to me, but it's going on this list.
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it.
DeleteThese books are all new to me - but What Alice forget is definitely being added to my wishlist. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteIt's very good!
DeleteWhile I didn't hate The Year of Magical Thinking, I also didn't love it and really don't get the buzz around it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I didn't flat out hate it. I just thought it was detached and cold.
DeleteOf your top books, The Sculptor is one I haven't heard of, but I'll get my hands on it now! I really hope 2017 is full of great books! Also, I really, really loved Love Letters to the Dead too.
ReplyDeleteWasn't it great? I hope you do pick up The Sculptor. It was good.
DeleteI like how a lot of the worst books were book club books. Ha! I need to read a Moriarty book!! AH!
ReplyDeleteYeah, what's up with that?
DeleteI think I need to pick up The Sculptor, it looks like an interesting GN. I like how wide of a variety of books you read all the time, it definitely keeps your reading interesting!
