For those of you who know me, you know I really hated the Twilight series. I gave up on the series and never read the last book. I have a myriad of reasons for my dislike but won't go into that here. Yet, despite my dislike of those books I read The Host by the same author and chose to read this one.

Despite how cringe worthy I find her romance and insta-attraction/love there is something about Meyer's writing that sort of sucks you in and holds you down while the story licks your face like a cutesie wittle puppy dog. So annoying.

That being said, this one didn't suck me in at all. I read it with a couple of good friends and we had a fun Twitter chat about it midway through so that kept me reading but about half way through I just wanted to be done so I could read something else.

It felt like the author had done her best to research it but it ended up being overly detailed and then, of course, she just couldn't help herself; she threw in a completely unnecessary and unbelievable romance. The characters just felt too young and naive for the kinds of people they were supposed to be.

Filled with convenience and predictability the rushed ending just didn't do it for me and I wished it had ended another way. Oh well.

Should you read it?
If you're a Twilight fan I think you'll find this one lacking in that Meyer strong hold style but it's got the romance so give it a whirl.

  1. I am not a Twilight fan...and I have to admit, I really have no desire to read this one...although if you had raved about it, I would have changed my mind. :D

  2. Hmmm ... I'm not sure I will be reading this one, at least not any time soon. I've seen mixed reviews, and I am definitely not a Twi-hard! I enjoyed the stories when they came up, but they are not ones that I will fangirl about like so many others do.

  3. Interesting. I read all the Twilight books but the last one as well - I really liked the first but the other ones drove me crazy. I liked THE HOST well enough. I have THE CHEMIST so I'll probably give it a go at some point, but I'm not rushing.

  4. I'm disappointed that you didn't like this book either. I had the same sort of feelings about the Twilight series. While I liked it initially, after a reread, I got past all that romance that sucks you in and found I didn't like it so much after all. I read the Host as well and actually enjoyed it so I was hoping that maybe Twilight was this author's fluke. I think I might still read this but it's not super high on my list. Lovely review, Jenny!

  5. After dnf-ing Twilight halfway through almost 10 years ago, I haven't gone near a Stephenie Meyer book! From your review, it sounds like she shouldn't be writing for this demographic.

  6. I didn't read Twilight and didn't really enjoy the movies...but I did read and love The Host which is why I picked this one up. I didn't mind the level of detail, but I did find the romance really lacking and the naivete of the characters (one in particular) unbelievable.

  7. Yeah, this wasn't her best. I was flat out bored during the first hundred pages, which, for Meyer, was surprising. Hopefully her next one is better.

  8. So, I agree about the ending. WHAT?! I know, right?! I thought the story was a bit too long (and I don't mind long books) and it was anticlimactic. But, I still enjoyed reading it and I'm glad you and Suey read it with me. I wish I had finished it before my surgery, though.

  9. I did finish the Twilight series, but I was grumpy and in a fowl mood during the whole thing. I refuse to read more Meyer.

  11. I really don't like Twilight either. I used to as a young teen but then Breaking Dawn came out, and I was older by that point and ugh. Nope. The Host was better but I just tend to not like Meyer's writing style. Glad you at least managed to have a fun Twitter chat! I probably won't pick this one up - thanks for the review.

  12. I did like Twilight (back in the day, when I picked it up just because of the cover and had no idea it was going to be a huge deal), and the Host, but for some reason I have zero interest in this one. I guess I just don't see it being a good thriller and thrillers are my go-to comfort reads. Maybe some day, if I see it at the library and I've miraculously caught up on my TBR piles....

  13. I have a love/hate relationship with Twilight. I did enjoy them, but at the same time I was constantly rooting for everyone to die. It was a weird experience. I haven't read anything else by her.

  14. I have mixed feelings on the Twilight series, which made me wary of The Host. I finished that one with mixed feelings as well, but more on the positive side than the negative. So now I'm not certain whether I should try this one or not...
