Review: My Ridiculous Romantic Obsessions

Title My Ridiculous Romantic Obsessions
By Becca Wilhite
Genre YA Contemporary
Pages 181
Recommended by Me

First sentence Mom pulls her new toy, a talking GPS directions-thingie up close to her eyes.

Synopsis
Sarah has lived her whole life waiting for the perfect romance. The kind of romance she sees in all the books she reads. But a past experience has left her a little bitter and untrusting. When she meets Ben, who seems to genuinely care for her, can she learn to trust again and realize life isn't a romance book?

What it has going for it
Once in awhile we stumble upon a book that is exactly what we needed to read at that moment in our lives. My Ridiculous Romantic Obsessions was that book for me. I’m not sure if I should admit this, but I totally could relate to Sarah, the MC. Her insecurities are my insecurities. Her romantic obsessions are, unfortunately, my romantic obsessions. It seriously felt like this book was written just for me. Don’t you just love that?! I know I do. It’s hard to pick my favorite thing about this one but I think I’ll go with the humor. I was laughing from page one. Sarah was ridiculously funny in a self deprecating sort of way. And guess what? Wait for it...You ready? This was about a college aged girl! Eeeep! Books about college aged people are hard to find it seems. Or at least they’re hard to find for me. I was so happy to have found this one. Well written with a beautiful message, this one was a pleasure to read.

What’s lacking
I did notice a few typos but they took nothing away from the story…at all! I also got a little frustrated at Sarah when she was being so dense but I’m sure that’s because I saw myself in her. Not fun seeing all your faults written across the page of a book. It is great to be given hope in the end, though.

Favorite moment
Ugh, I’m not sure why I decided to put this favorite moment thing into my reviews. I can never pick just one. I’ll go with the allergic reaction part because it was funny and sad all in one.

Yea or Nay?
Yes, I’d highly recommend this one!

  1. I love it when you find a book that's meant just for you! Glad you've found one. At the moment I'm not really into romance but I'll keep it in mind for later :)

ps I really like the favourite moment!

  2. This sounds like such a cute book! I love (and sometimes hate) when I feel really similar to the main character. And yay for college-aged characters! :)

Also, the Provo Library has 7 copies of this checked in, in case anyone local was wanting to read it. Well, it will be 6 because I'm going to pick one up...

  4. Yay! I'm so glad you liked this one. I can't wait to read it. I liked but didn't love BRIGHT BLUE MIRACLE. Maybe I'll love this one. I'm glad to hear that the MC is colleged-age. I agree that those are hard to find.

Thanks for the review. I can't wait for your interview of Ms. Wilhite!

  6. Just the title alone sounds like it's for me too! The idea that it's a college age girl makes it better. You make it sound amazing so..... added to the TBR! :D

  7. This title was great! Definitely seems like a book a lot of readers can relate to. I'm with you about the age / stage of life of the character -- it would be nice to see that in more books. Nice review!

  8. You know what, I think we all have similar romantic obsessions that we just don't want to admit to! I'm feeling a bit over YA paranormal at the moment so a good contemp book is perfect for me.

  9. I keep trying not to add more books to my TBR... but I think this one sounds so cute and like something I could definitely relate to from my not-so-distant past. So.. I guess the list will swell further, haha.

  12. Read your review yesterday before heading to the library so I checked it out and read it this morning. Cute book. Fun writing. I have to admit that as your sister I partial read it with you in mind because I was never much of an obsesser, is that a word? Anyway, for the record, you are beautiful, smart, and funny just like the MC. She did remind me a lot of you. Here's hoping you find your dumb, Adonis, (that was my favorite), soccer jock. ;) Love ya.

  14. +JMJ+

I have some ridiculous romantic obsessions of my own! I should see if they are anything like Sarah's. =)

And you're right that YA novels with college-aged protagonists are hard to find. Thanks for mentioning that detail!

  15. It is good that there are new YA books about college aged people. I've read some, but all were published about 15 years ago.

    1. Yeah, they're calling it new YA I guess. Whatever it is we need more of it.

  16. Hey, look at that -- a book we agree on! I really liked this one, just because it's light and cute and fun. You don't find a lot of YA-type books like that on the market. It was a nice change. Refreshing, you know?

  17. I live the title and I'm so glad you liked it! I can't remember the last time I read a book where the mc was in college... Maybe I never have cause I can't even think of one. I live reading your favorite moments, but I can imagine how hard it is to pick just one. I'm not sure I could do it.

    1. Yes, the favorite moments are hard...even more so in a book I didn't like. I'll keep doing them, though. They're fun.
