Utah Book Month Read Along

Our read along of Not in the Script by Amy Finnegan is at an end. Now we get to have book club with the author tonight! How exciting is that?!  Here's my answers to the second half discussion questions.

1. Have your opinions of any of the characters changed from the first half?
Not really. I was hoping Brett might be used in a more clever way.

2. Would you watch Coyote Hills?
I have no idea. That's one of the things that bugged me. I had no idea what it was about. It sounds like a 90210 or something so probably not.

3. Did everything go down like you thought it would?
Oh yes, a little too predictable.

4. If there's a lesson to be learned from this story, what do you think it is?
You can't spend your whole life making everyone else happy. At some point you need to think of yourself.

5. How do you feel about the portrayal of the parents of these characters?
Emma's mother as her manager and the problems it was causing could have been used in a more exciting, add to the plot, kind of way but that too was smoothed over all sweetly.

6. What parts felt realistic and what parts felt unrealistic?
I feel bad, I really do but the whole thing just felt too neat and tidy and unrealistic.

7. What was your favorite part?
I liked when Emma and Jake went stargazing together and finally kissed.

8. Who was your favorite character?
Probably one of Jake's friends.

9. Do you have a favorite quote from the book?
Not one that comes to mind.

10. If you were in charge of a sequel, what major plot would you include?
I really don't think she left things open for a sequel. The drama of Emma firing her mother could have been something left hanging. Using Brett in the way I wanted her too could have left things more open. Honestly, though. I was fine having this one just be a stand alone.

Utah Book Month Read Along

As part of Utah Book Month I've been reading Not in the Script by Amy Finnegan. I'm also reading it for my book club and the author herself will be coming to our book club meeting. Exiting right?! I thought so. We're reading this book in two sections as it's a fast read. Here's my thoughts for the first half.

1. What's your overall impression of this story so far? Are you liking it? If so, what do you like? Are you not liking it? If so, what do you not like?

This one is definitely a romance. I wish more was going on than just a romance but, it's OK. I'm not hating it anyway.

2. Do you like the cover? What does it suggest about the book?

Nope, sorry, the cover is just not my thing.

3. What do you think about the dynamics of Rachel and Emma's relationship? How would you feel if you were Emma? If you were Rachel?

Honestly I feel like we didn't get that great of a look at Rachel and I'm nearly done with the book. She just seems like a plot device not a real person.

4. Let's talk about the slow build up between Jake and Emma. Which part was your favorite?

Slow build? What slow build? This was major instalove. No they didn't quite act on it right away but close enough.

5. Brett has a playboy persona with a tidbit of actual humanity hiding underneath. What do you think he's really like? What are his motivations?

The verdict is still out on Brett. I think his character could be used in a more creative way but that's just me.

6. What real celebrities would you cast for these pretend celebrity characters?

I suck at this.

Selena Gomez as Emma

Jared Padalecki as Jake
Alex Pettyfer as Brett
Taylor Swift as Kimmi, even though she can't act

7. What do you think about the behind the scene particulars of filming a TV show? Does it sound fun? Hard? Exciting? Boring?

This is another thing that's bugging me. What is this TV show? It sounds boring as sin! The scenes we do see are like two lines long and I really don't get it. Oh well. I guess it's not about the TV show but still.

8. What do you think about Emma's vow to never date a guy she works with? Do you think real life celebrities have this same policy?

Emma, Emma, what vow? All you date are costars and you don't seem to be changing that anytime soon. Yes, we all know costars date. No real surprise there.

9. If you were Emma, would you have told Rachel what's going down with Jake WAY before now? Or do you think Emma is justified in keeping things secret?

Emma's "secret" is like the only drama/plot in the whole book. So, yeah, I'm fine with it. I need something to keep me reading, you know?

10. What's your evaluation of Jake's character so far?

He's a little too nice for my taste. Too perfect.

Review: Dune

Title Dune
By Frank Herbert
Genre Adult Scifi
Pages 528

First Sentence In the week before their departure to Arrakis, when all the final scurrying about had reached a nearly unbearable frenzy, an old crone came to visit the mother of the boy, Paul.

Synopsis
Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family--and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. (from Goodreads)

What is has going for it
I'll make this short and sweet. If you want to read my discussion posts about this book for a more in depth review you can find them here, here and here.  I read this one for Book Club and as part of a read along hosted by Jenni, Kami, and Suey. The read-along was awesome. There were Twitter chats and a sort of ongoing discussion going on all the time. I really enjoyed that aspect of reading this book. And while I can say I'm glad I read it, and no, it wasn't torture, I enjoyed the read along better then the book.

What's lacking
My biggest problem with this one was that it starts out very confusing and took quite awhile to get into. That being said, once you do get into it, it moves along at a quick pace, covering a lot of ground...Too much ground. It just seemed like too much happened for one book. Even if it was over 500 pages. I also really disliked the way Paul turned out. He seemed too bitter at being a slave to fate. Even though, Jenni assures me that, when read again and again, one picks up on so much more and might have a different opinion of Paul, I don't think I'll read it again.

So, no, I didn't hate this one I just didn't really like it.

Yea or Nay?
If you love scifi and classics, then yes. Otherwise, it's not one I'd recommend.

Dune Read Along: Discussion Three

Well, we did it! We finished reading Dune. For our third and final discussion Kami is hosting. Stop on by her blog to link up and read other peoples thoughts on part three. Don't forget the Twitter chat tonight at 9:00 pm MDT. #DuneRAL

1. What are your overall thoughts? Did you like it?
I was into the plot but just never connected to anyone. I also felt like A LOT happened in just one book. It felt like too much and that affected my overall opinion.

2. Do you think you could ride a giant worm?

Never. Despite being a big fat wimp, I'd feel bad. I couldn't believe how they hurt them to keep them above sand. It was an awesome idea and it worked well for the story but it made me sad.

3. Paul's relationship with his mom, Jessica, dramatically changed and evolved over the course of the book. How did their relationship change and why do you think it did?

Definitely things changed between them. He was all dependent on her at first but then quickly took a leadership role. I understood his resentment of her but I thought he was kind of a jerk about it.

4. What do you think about Paul's lack of emotion?

I didn't think Paul had a lack of emotions until that last scene. Then I sort of thought he became a complete asshole! So he was pissed at his fate. Big deal! We all have crap we have to do and hate it sometimes. So what! Suck it up!

5. Now that I've finished, I feel like I'd pick up on a lot more of the details and things if I read it again. Do you think you'll reread Dune? If this is a reread, did you catch different things this time around?

I won't be re-reading this one. I know I'd pick up on more if I did but I just can't. There wasn't enough emotional connection to any of the characters for me.

6. How do you feel about the political arrangement at the end? Do you feel bad for Princess Irulan or Chani?

That was a really shitty ending. I'm sorry, but ouch! Why were they so damn heartless towards Princess Irulan? Geeze. You'd think Paul, being a slave of fate, would be more understanding of her. What a horrible cruel way to end the book. I felt like Jessica and Paul had become incredibly bitter.

7. Will you read the rest of the series?

No. Mainly because I learned in this book that when I expected that maybe Herbert wasn't a complete jerk and would maybe take us down a better path he NEVER did. So I can hardly continue reading the series. He won't make any thing better.

8. Favorite character and why?
I might have said Alia or Jessica or even Paul but by the end of the book my favorite character was Princess Irulan. Most of the chapter introductions were her history of Maud'Dib and after seeing how cruelly she was going to be treated it made me think, "maybe she finds solace in writing the history".

9. What did you think about the quotes at the beginning of each chapter? Did you read them? Were they interesting? Were they helpful?

I think I covered this question above. I read them. I enjoyed them but I was trying to figure out who Princess Irulan was.

10. Did you have fun during the Read Along? Was there anything we could have done better? Would you have read this book if you hadn't joined?

I had fun. The Twitter chats were fun and seeing everyone's opinions has been fun too. I would have read this book for book club but I would have dragged through it. The Read Along helped me get through it faster.

Dune Read Along: Discussion Two

It's time for our second discussion on  the Dune Read Along. Today's discussion is hosted by Suey and the questions cover part two of Dune.  If you'd like to read other discussions or link up you can do so on Suey's blog.  And don't forget our Twitter chat Thursday May 2nd at 9:00 pm MST.
Ok here we go.

1. What do you think about all the rituals the Freman have surrounding water? Especially the funeral.

I can totally get this obsession with water but one wonders why people actually try living on Arrakis. Why not have water shipped in or live off planet  on a space station or something with water being delivered?

The funeral had one of my favorite quotes from this book.

"The meeting between ignorance and knowledge, between brutality and culture—it begins in the dignity with which we treat our dead."

2. Any other thoughts you have about the Freman now that we've been introduced a little better?

I think they're very typical native type people. Though, I'm really not sure if they're native to Arrakis. Jenni?

3.. How do you feel about the way Paul is progressing to his destiny?

I don't like the "many paths and out comes" crap. He's not all that cool if he can only see what might happen.

4. We had more deaths in this section, two that stand out. Compare and contrast them.

I'm disappointed that Kynes dies. Especially after having this breakthrough about water.  Jamis was annoying and I didn't care that he died. I felt like he was used as a plot device to get the people to accept Paul... twice.

5. What political maneuverings are happening during this section? I'd love a nice uncomplicated explanation!

We have several political maneuverings going on. I'm wondering why the Bene Gesserit want Feyd-Rautha's blood line to live on. I'm not sure why the Baron wants to make Arrakis a prison planet. I'm afraid that went over my head.

6. What religious events are happening?

I guess Jessica becoming the new Reverend Mother was interesting, especially because she was pregnant, but I'm confused. Was this Reverend Mother a little off her rocker or did Jessica not understand the Bene Gesserit completely?  So confused.

7. What do you think of the Baron?

I think he's disgusting of course.  And honestly not as clever as he thinks if he thinks the Freman are wiped out.

8. Any foreshadowing moments that stand out to you? What's going to happen?

I actually think Hawat is going to play a huge role near the end.  I think he's blind as a bat but I like that he's playing the Baron and Feyd-Rautha against each other.

9. How do you like (or dislike) this section compared to the first? Any new favorite characters?

I'm liking this section better than the first but I'm also becoming less interested in the book as a whole. I'm feeling like it's not going to wrap up and the characters I'm interested in aren't going to have a role in this book.

10. Do you plan to finish and stick with us through part three?

Yes, yes.  I've already started part three.

Dune Read-along Part One Discussion

It's been a week and section one has been read!  It was a bit of a slow confusing start but really picked up and I'm eager to continue with book two.  The questions for part one were asked by Jenni, one of our lovely hosts.  Here we go.

Questions
Have you ever read a high sci-fi book before?
Nothing quite as hardcore as Dune.
Is this your first time reading Dune?
Yes
If this is your first time reading Dune, is the book anything like you expected it to be? If this isn’t your first time reading it, have you noticed anything different this time around?
This is my first time reading it. It's very much like I expected. I've read enough "older" books to know what to expect.
Were you surprised that you knew who the traitor was before everything went down at the end of this book? Did it help prepare you? Or, were you bugged by it?
It didn't bug me. When I know and the characters don't though I'm always screaming at them to see what's happening but I still enjoy knowing something they don't.
What do you think of the idea of recycling the water from your body to survive in such an arid climate?
I don't think it's gross but I did wonder, when they were describing the stillsuits, if recycling sweat  etc. in that manner was even possible. I'm sure it probably is and I think Herbet is smart to think of it. Plus the whole idea really makes you realize how desperately important water is.
What was your favorite part of this section? Why?
Obviously I liked when the action picked up but I think my favorite part of this section was the dinner party. I like that we get to hear all the main character's thoughts and all the political intrigue just makes me happy.
Which character(s) do you find the most interesting? Why?
Of course I like Paul and Jessica the best. I also really liked the Duke and since his death was very for-shadowed I tried not to become attached but I did anyway. I'm also very intrigued by Kynes.
Are there any revelations in this section that surprised you?
Oh yes!  Totally didn't see Jessica being the Baron's daughter. Now I want to know what the hell's going to happen there.
What do you think of Dune so far? Are you having a hard time following what’s going on? Is it engaging? Boring?
I'm really liking it. The first bit was very confusing but as soon as they get to Arrakis it gets good. I thought so anyway.
Do you have any predictions about what’s going to happen in the next section?
I think we can expect to see more about Paul and his destiny unfold, but no, I don't really have any predictions.

So, yeah. I'm enjoying the book more than I thought I would. And because it wasn't mentioned it the questions can I just say how pissed I was that the Baron escaped! I know, I know. He can't very well die off, he's the main villain, but I still was pissed!   Anywho, I'm enjoying things so far and anxious to continue.

Don't forget the Twitter chat tonight at 9:00pm MST. It's a fun conversation. So far we've been discussing cheating (for those who are struggling through this part) Tsk. Tsk. It's a riot! Rember to use the #DuneRAL hashtag.

Under the Dome Group Read Final Discussion

Well, we did it! I know you were worried. ;) We're all done and it's time for the last questions and answers discussion. Brace yourself.

1. Were you pleased with the end that Stephen King gave Jim Rennie? Is it what you expected? Was it fitting? If not, how would you have changed it?
Sigh! Yes, I suppose it was fitting, and definitely freaky, but I really wanted to see someone blow his brains out. Yeah, I have a violent streak in me. In fact, I started hoping at the end that he'd live just so I could see him get busted and thrown in prison.

2. Explain to us what you thought about the aliens and their "magnifying glass." Did you take it at face value, or is there some underlying deep meaning to it? In other words, is there actually a moral to this story? And if so, how would you explain it?
Oh snap! When the whole ant analogy was revealed I set the book down and just sat there trying to gather the pieces of my blown mind. Oh sure they were "aliens" but the description of them certainly sounded like ants to me and in my mind they were. Or at least represented them.

3. Pretty much everyone dies! Which death was the saddest for you? The hardest for you to read about? The most gruesome? The one that had you cheering? The one that made you the maddest?

Saddest? I cried when Sammy Bushey did the whole murder suicide thing. I just felt bad for her.
Hardest to read about? When Rory tried to shoot a whole threw the Dome. :( I was sad but mainly I was just cringing like crazy.
Most gruesome? Hands down, when Junior killed Angie McCane at the very beginning. *shivers*
Cheering? I'd have to go with the Sammy Bushey murder suicide again. I was sad for her but glad she was killing those other two creeps!
Maddest? I was furious when Brenda Perkins went to Rennie all alone. Like we didn't know what was coming.

4. If this were made into a movie (as Stephen King books often are) who would you cast in some of the leading roles?
I can't answer this. I never picture books made into movies and if I do I never imagine who would play the characters. Seriously. Sorry.

5. Do you think this book is an accurate portrayal of true human nature? Do you think everyone is as corrupt as this? How do you think your community would do in such a crisis? How would you personally handle it? What side would you have ended up on?
I think it was a good portrayal in certain communties\cities. There are people as insane and power hungry and corrupt as Rennie out there. Likewise, there are people as basically good as Barbie and his "gang". I have no idea how I'd handle something like this. I'd probably be most like one of the unnamed characters who dies horribly in the end. :(

I had a blast reading this with everyone. I hope you all did too. I do have to add that by the end, my favorite character was Rommie. Don't ask, I just loved him. I also cried like a baby during the scenes between Ollie and Private Ames. Ollie's story was heartbreaking and inspiring.

Under the Dome Group Read Discussion 3

Whew! I had a tinsy lull during this section but things certainly got exciting again. Maybe it wasn't a lull but "the wall" You know? When you're running and you hit that point where you can't take one more step and then you get a second wind? Yeah, maybe that's what happened. Anyway here's the questions and my answers for this week.

We finally got to see what's probably behind the Dome. Did that freak you out? Are you convinced it's extraterrestrial?
Oh man! I was so freaked out and at the edge of my seat when Rusty was discovering what is probably behind the Dome. I say probably because who knows with King?! Anywho, I almost had a stab of disappointment when we found out it might be otherworldly. :( Still, it's very exciting...and scary!

Jackie thinks no one outside the Dome understands. She thinks it's "different" for the people inside the Dome. Do you agree with that, or do you tend to feel like Cox and think someone should just put a bullet in Rennie's head?
Oh, I'm so with Cox! Seriously. If I was in a situation like this or Lord of the Flies I swear I'd just kill off the bad guy and take the consequences. I hate control freaks and power hungry evil dudes! Of course, I say that, but in truth, I probably wouldn't do anything either. Sigh!

Speaking of Rennie, do you think he really believes that everything he's doing is for the good of the town, or is it all about power?
I have mixed feelings but I think I'm deciding that he tells himself that he's good and great and doing everything for the good of the town but he's just covering his ass and wants power; thrives on it, apparently. I swear if his heart takes him out and not Barbie, I'm gonna be so mad!!! The Chef on the other hand, I think he truly believes all that religious stuff.

I'm finding it very interesting that the bad guys all seem to have some strong religious beliefs. Have you noticed that and wondered about it? Do you think it's symbolic of something or just coincidence?
I don't think it's coincidence, nor is it bugging me. Sometimes I feel like authors have some issue with religion and think all religious people are freaks so they lash out at them in books. However I don't think that's what King is doing. And it is true that power hungry control freaks often use religion as an excuse to take over.

Do you think Barbie being dragged to jail was the push the town needed to start forming their "side"? Do you think a war of sorts is brewing and will that be what causes the fire on Halloween?
I'm afraid a war is brewing. What with The Chef having all those weapons and the police force being a bunch of crazy high school kids. But all that hot weather stuff is making me wonder if that won't eventually cause the fire. Either way I'm nervous but excited to see how it all comes together.

So, yeah, I'm excited to finish up in the coming week and finally see what the heck will happen and what's going on.

Under The Dome Group Read Discussion 2

Hey, everyone! It's week two of our group read of Under the Dome for the R.I.P Challenge. Some crazy stuff is going down and I'm getting all worked up. Argh! This book should not be read in public. I tried it once and kept gasping and drawing attention to myself. So, anyways, this week Suey from It's All About Books has provided our questions.
1.  We've talked a little bit about characters already, but I'd like to know who is your favorite so far? And why?
This one's tough! One of my favorites just got killed! Ahhh! I don't think anyone's safe and I don't want to get attached. :( I think I'm going to have to go with "Scarecrow" Joe McClatchey. Mainly because I think he might be safe but I don't even know if that's true. I do like Barbie and his way of handling things (the store riot) but his hesitancy bothers me but it's probably for the best. So, basically, I don't want to have a favorite; they'll get killed!

2. What do you think is up with these kid seizures? Do you have any clue how they are tied to the dome?
I'm thinking the Dome is electric or magnetic or something so I could see that having something to do with the seizures but why it's only affecting kids (sort of) is beyond me.
3. What has been your most favorite creepy/scary scene so far?
Oh boy, I don't know. The riot was freaky because it was so realistic but the truth is, Junior freaks me out. Who sits with dead people and touches them and holds their hands. He likes the smell of their decay, for heavens sake! Blech! Anytime it starts talking about him I get seriously creeped out!

4. I'm assuming everyone knew what to expect from a Stephen King book, writing/style-wise. But still, I'm curious to know how you are all handling the vulgarity in parts. Does it bother you? Does it add to the story and give you a feel for certain characters? Or does it distract?
I'm so immune to this stuff (unfortunately) that I haven't really noticed. I've also been out there in the world and seen that people really do swear...a lot! So, it's not that unrealistic. Necessary? Meh, but it's normal for King and most people so why wouldn't he add it?

5. This last section ended with what I thought was an unexpected murder. Do you think anyone could get murdered at this point? Or is there a line that you do not cross regarding certain characters? In other words, do you think certain characters are safe from getting the ax? Are you curious about who will get it next, and who will survive?
Oh my gosh! That murder was not unexpected when she chose to go alone to meet Big Jim but I was still devastated. And the way he "buried" the body...Ahhhh! With King anything is possible; Big Jim could win and all the good characters could be killed off. I almost wouldn't be surprised. And, because of all the ominous hints about more suicides I'm starting to think, "OK, crap! Who's going to kill themselves?" I said it before and I'll say it again, I'm trying REALLY hard not to get attached to these characters!

So, despite the anxiety this book is causing me I'm loving it so far and am dying to know what will happen next. It's very hard to reign myself in and try to keep to the assignments instead of reading ahead.

Under the Dome Group Read Discussion 1

Hey, everyone, it's week one the Under the Dome group read! As part of the R.I.P Challenge, Suey and I decided to host a group read of this massive book for the Peril of the Group Read Challenge. Fridays through the month of October will be our discussion days. So here we go, a few questions and my answers.

Wow, we are being introduced to a lot of characters, some that aren't even making it. Are you having a hard time keeping everyone straight?
I knew going into this one, that it was going to be full of lots and lots of characters so I was prepared. I try not to get to bogged down and worry about it. I figure King writes well enough to make me remember the important ones and so far so good. I'm Hating Jim Rennie and am downright scared of his freaky son. I'm liking Barbara, Dr Everett and Julia Shumway.

It's early in, but any predictions on what the Dome is or where it came from? Were you surprised at the idea of someone inside the town being responsible?
I have absolutely no predictions at all, I don't even want to go there. I'll just let the story unfold. I hadn't even thought about someone inside being responsible until it was pointed out in the book. Now I'm looking at everyone suspiciously!

Is the Science of the Dome and the science being used to test it interesting to you, or are you more character driven and could care less about what can and cannot get through the dome or how deep under ground it goes etc?
Once again, I hadn't really thought about it and now that things are being discussed in the book I'm quite fascinated, still I don't want to make any guesses as to where it came from. Either I'll be way off and embarrass myself, or I'll ruin the story by guessing too much so I'll just wait and see.

Who do you think will prove to be the bigger threat inside the Dome: Jim Rennie or his son Junior? Or someone else entirely?
Oh boy! Jim seems the bigger threat but knowing what we know about his son Junior...I'm terrified! I can't wait to see what happens. It's like being drawn to a gruesome accident; sure, you're cringing and horrified but also morbidly fascinated.

Do you think, so far, King has realistically described what would happen if this happened in reality?
Oh yes! The military, the presidents speech, the religious reactions, the protests, all of it! You just know there would be some one looking to make a few bucks off a tragedy like this. So the store owner selling hot dogs and drinks at the protest and prayer meeting was incredibly realistic to me.

So, yeah, I was a little scared going in that I wouldn't like it, or that I'd have a hard time, but now I'm all wrapped up in the story and all I want to do is read. I'm trying to pace myself but I'm already a little ahead of schedule, I can't help it, I'm loving it!

R.I,P Challenge And An Invite

Alright, I wasn't going to join this fun...er...spooky challenge hosted by Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings because I had my fall reading schedule full but when I saw this challenge...

This Peril involves reading one book that fits within the R.I.P. definition.

...I decided  that was easy enough, I could squeeze in one book. So I shall be reading...

I've had this book on my shelf forever and I think it will fit in perfectly for this challenge. Also, I shall be doing this challenge...

Suey of It's All About Books and I have been planning to read this...

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.

...and are inviting anyone who was planning on reading it anyway, or who, just now decided they wanted to read it, to join us. Just let either me or Suey know and we'll let you know as soon as we get going which will probably be the first of October...maybe sooner.

Happy Reading, everyone!
