Review: Mercy

Title Mercy
By Rebecca Lim
For Fun
Source I own it

First sentence There's something very wrong with me.

Synopsis
Mercy doesn't know much about her true self, all she has is a sense of her true appearance and her dreams of a lost love. She jumps from body to body, not knowing how or why. All she can do is try to make the life of the body she inhabits better. But this time, in the body of Carmen, a young choir singer, something's different.

General thoughts
Where do I start? I had absolutely no real opinion of this one nearly the whole way through it. I'm not sure if it's because I couldn't connect with any of the characters, or if it was the authors intention that I feel distanced but either way it made it hard for me to really form an opinion. The writing was absolutely delightful! I don't usually share but I wanted to share a few paragraphs so you can see what I'm talking about.

I look back at Richard Coates, wandering his motorbike graveyard like a restless spirit, until he is lost to sight.

His voice is like a muted roar, like waves breaking across all the world's oceans in tandem, a thunderclap to split the skies.

Isn't that beautiful? I loved the writing! It made the  a book that might have been a little lackluster quite good. I think my biggest problem was there was a small mystery to figure out but it felt like the whole book was a set up for the rest of the series. The cliffhanger ending had me furious! Not just because it left you wanting more but because just as the story got going it ended! So annoying.

Characters
Mercy/Carmen was an interesting conundrum. Who she was or what happened in her past that left her jumping from body to body never really became clear to me. Either it was totally obvious and I just completely missed it, or it really was confusing. All in all, I liked Mercy she had integrity and was brave and kinda scary when she wanted to be. Ryan and his parents were slightly unbelievable. I had a hard time believing they would really still be acting the way they did, but I liked Ryan well enough and felt for him at the end during the big cliffhanger.

Would I recommend it?
This is the first fallen angel book I've read so I can't compare it to any others but I would recommend it for the beautiful writing alone.

  3. Hey Jenny, It seems more and more series are using the first book as a setup to the rest of the series and not really giving much away. It sucks because it just seems like way for the authors to make nor money? Born at Midnight was kind of like this, you spent the whole book trying to figure out what Kylie was and why but you don't. Great review though, the writing has piqued my interest.

  4. Tristan, Yeah, it's very frustrating when a book doesn't give much away in the first book. But the writing was beautiful!

  5. I haven't really enjoyed many of the fallen angel books I've read. Still, good writing might make it more interesting than some of the ones with terrible writing.

  6. Melissa, Yeah, at least the writing was good. And the fallen angel thing was so lightly touched on that it's hard to tell how it will turn out.

  7. I've never been able to get into angels IDK why. Yes the writing is beautiful! It has happened to me too that while the writing is great, still I can't bring myself to care for the characters :( Thanks for the honest review!

  8. Book Purring, I didn't think I'd like the fallen angel thing and I still don't really but this one had a few intriguing elements that had me interested enough to try.
