Book vs Movie: Book wins

K, I know you're just dying to know what books I thought were better than the movie after I called myself a book blogger and then proceeded to list movies that I thought were better than books. Tsk tsk. I know, I know.
Believe it or not I usually like books better. So, I'll list some to prove it.

The Lovely Bones
Do I really need to say anything? Hollywood should have just left this one alone! Even Mark Whalberg couldn't make this one worth it. The book is amazing nothing can compare and nothing should try.

Harry Potter
I'm sorry if you like the movies. I mean, they weren't the worst things I've ever seen but when compared to the books...come on? Really?

Frankenstein
Well, this is my favorite book of all time and every movie adaption I've ever seen makes me so mad I could punch someone! It's as if they just don't get it, and they make a mockery of the most beautiful thing ever written. Now for something AWESOME. Check out the link for the most beautiful illustrations of Frankenstein. I get chills and teary eyed every time I see these.

Persuasion
Another favorite book that movies just can't seem to capture correctly. This book took my breath away and made me cry and any movies based on the book just don't have the same effect on me.

Eragon
I love this book! I love the series! I can't wait for the last book that's being released this year. And then Hollywood attempts and fails to make a movie. It was so bad I was embarrassed for them!

I could go on and on but that last post with the movies went on a little long. Or so I felt. So do you think I'm being unfair to movie makers everywhere? Have you read these books? Did you see the movies?

  1. I completely agree with you on Harry Potter. (I haven't read the other books yet.) I love (kind of love/hate) the movies, but the books are so much better! I love the detail of the books and I love being in Harry's head.

  2. My hubby and I are listening to The Dark is Rising, which I adore. That movie was probably on par with the horrible-ness of the Eragon movie. Seriously, so painful.

  3. You are definitely right about all of the above except that I can't really comment on The Lovely Bones because I haven't seen it. I didn't like the book though so my opinion doesn't matter anyway. :)

  4. Jenni Elyse, Oh the books are sooo much better.

Melissa, I saw that movie! Awful! The book was way better.

Kim, You didn't like the Lovely Bones? This we must discuss at Book Club.

  5. I have to agree with you on Frankenstein! It is one of my favorites and I find it disturbing that they just can't do the book justice with the movies yet the just keep making them. Thank you for sharing that artwork too, its amazing!

  6. Hi Jenny,
I'm following you from book blogs. It's always fun to see more Utah bloggers. :)
I agree with you - the movie is almost never as good as the book. I think the Percy Jackson movie was another good (bad?) example of a movie doing sad things to a decent book.

  7. Ang, I'm glad you appreciated the art. I remember the first time I saw it in a book. I made copies of some of my favorites and I still have them. I'd love to frame them.

Kathy, Thanks for stopping by. I totally forgot Percy Jackson. That's another one that needs to be added.

  8. I read Lovely Bones, and liked the book, but would not see the movie. There is no way I can watch that subject matter.

I am one of those who actually came to like Harry Potter via the movies. Before I started watching the movies, I thought the books were a bit 'meh'. I am now reading the series, slowly, all the way through and think highly of the books.

I cannot comment on the rest because I have not either watched or read the story.

  9. Wow! Look at all these comments! I agree with Frankenstein, and Eragon for sure. The Lovely Bones was strange and the movie was very creepy. The book not as much if I remember right. There's no way Harry Potter movies can capture the stuff in the book. And Persuasion? I don't know... I thought the movie was pretty good, but I'm not so much a Persuasion perfectionist... yet.

  10. ibeeeg, Well, then I'm glad the movies were good for something. No, I know the kids who can't read yet probably will read the books when they can because of the movies.

Suey, I'm not saying I hated any of these movies, I actually saw Eragon twice, I just like the books way better.

  11. It's funny that you say that about Frankenstein. I was forced to read it in school and I won't ever forget the part where the monster's yellow eyes open. It was very scary. I guess some things are way better in books with the slow build up and discription and maybe picturing it in your own mind.

  12. Sarah, Sorry you were "forced" to read it. I've read it twice all of my own choosing. Very creepy and very beautiful!
