Under the Dome Group Read Discussion 1

Hey, everyone, it's week one the Under the Dome group read! As part of the R.I.P Challenge, Suey and I decided to host a group read of this massive book for the Peril of the Group Read Challenge. Fridays through the month of October will be our discussion days. So here we go, a few questions and my answers.

Wow, we are being introduced to a lot of characters, some that aren't even making it. Are you having a hard time keeping everyone straight?
I knew going into this one, that it was going to be full of lots and lots of characters so I was prepared. I try not to get to bogged down and worry about it. I figure King writes well enough to make me remember the important ones and so far so good. I'm Hating Jim Rennie and am downright scared of his freaky son. I'm liking Barbara, Dr Everett and Julia Shumway.

It's early in, but any predictions on what the Dome is or where it came from? Were you surprised at the idea of someone inside the town being responsible?
I have absolutely no predictions at all, I don't even want to go there. I'll just let the story unfold. I hadn't even thought about someone inside being responsible until it was pointed out in the book. Now I'm looking at everyone suspiciously!

Is the Science of the Dome and the science being used to test it interesting to you, or are you more character driven and could care less about what can and cannot get through the dome or how deep under ground it goes etc?
Once again, I hadn't really thought about it and now that things are being discussed in the book I'm quite fascinated, still I don't want to make any guesses as to where it came from. Either I'll be way off and embarrass myself, or I'll ruin the story by guessing too much so I'll just wait and see.

Who do you think will prove to be the bigger threat inside the Dome: Jim Rennie or his son Junior? Or someone else entirely?
Oh boy! Jim seems the bigger threat but knowing what we know about his son Junior...I'm terrified! I can't wait to see what happens. It's like being drawn to a gruesome accident; sure, you're cringing and horrified but also morbidly fascinated.

Do you think, so far, King has realistically described what would happen if this happened in reality?
Oh yes! The military, the presidents speech, the religious reactions, the protests, all of it! You just know there would be some one looking to make a few bucks off a tragedy like this. So the store owner selling hot dogs and drinks at the protest and prayer meeting was incredibly realistic to me.

So, yeah, I was a little scared going in that I wouldn't like it, or that I'd have a hard time, but now I'm all wrapped up in the story and all I want to do is read. I'm trying to pace myself but I'm already a little ahead of schedule, I can't help it, I'm loving it!

  1. I'm happy to hear you are loving it, because so far I am barely liking it.
Barbara, Dr Everett and Julia Shumway are my favorite characters as well, but they are so obviously positioned as "the good guys".
I hope things will get more interesting soon!

  2. I'm not minding it but I am not hurrying to read, in fact I am just finishing a short book that I read in between, but it is interesting and I keep wondering if I should by a generator or anything.

  4. This is a great book to be doing for the R.I.P Challenge. No one does suspenseful horror like King does. I hope you guys all enjoy this book. Your reactions sounds exactly like mine you Jenny. I don't like to get too bogged down thinking about all the tiny details. I just want to get on with the great read :)

  5. Selina, I'm sorry you're not liking it. I'm just relieved to be reading something that is pulling me in. I'm having a hard time getting into stuff lately.

Adams Family, Yes, books like this make me think about food storage and emergency supplies.

Bookfool, Yes, it can be quite daunting but luckily it's very exciting.

Lan, I trust King to explain all the "stuff" so I'm having a blast just enjoining the story.

  6. Suey, I don't know why your comment isn't showing up but I'll reply anyway. ;) I'm on about page 350. Yeah, we need to slow down!

  7. I read Under the Dome when it first came out, and I read everything he writes. I'm enjoying seeing the discussion on the read-a-long since it includes people that don't normally read King's books. I have a short story by King on my Kindle that I'm saving for Dewey's Readathon, Mile 81. And I'm really looking forward to his new book in November!

  9. Kate, I've only read a handful of books by King, I've liked them all so I really should read more but alas...

Suey, Hee hee, yeah, at least it opened in my email so I knew what you said.

  10. Wow, I thought I'd left a comment here much earlier as your questions were so thought provoking. I won't be posting on my blog, as I already put up a review post and would so hate to spoil it for those who are reading along, but I do enjoy your questions and would love to throw in my thoughts to your discussion.

I was totally unable to predict where the Dome came from...aliens? That was my initial guess. Some external force for sure, because it seemed too powerful for the wimps living trapped within.

I must say that knowing the origins of the Dome, and how it would be resolved, kept me reading to the end. I'm not disappointed either, in how King resolved it, but we'll talk about that later.

The only part that got to me, really, was the profanity. One expects death, murder, blood, mayhem with King. But, I could have done with less swearing if it was up to me. A rather minor point in a fascinating book, though. So interesting, and I think accurate how in the vacuum of leadership evil can arise.

  11. Bellezza, Oh, I was hoping you'd join us anyway but that's OK. I'm very freaking interested how King will wrap this all up. Can't wait!
